The Lord of the Rings: War in the North Returns on Steam as Legacy Edition
The Lord of the Rings: War in the North has returned to Steam as the Legacy Edition, bringing the 2011 action RPG back to modern PC players. Aspyr released the game on 11 August 2026, with the new edition available through Steam.
The release is significant because the original PC version was retired from the Steam store. The original game, developed by Snowblind Studios and published by Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment, launched in November 2011.
The new Legacy Edition is instead developed and published by Aspyr. It offers the same core Middle-earth adventure while presenting the game for current PC hardware and operating systems.
A return to Middle-earth
War in the North tells a parallel story set during the events of The Lord of the Rings. While Frodo and Samwise make their journey towards Mount Doom, players form a separate fellowship tasked with defending the North against Sauron’s forces.
The story centres on Agandaûr, a Black Númenórean serving Sauron. He has gathered an army around the ruins of Fornost, creating a threat away from the better-known events of the main fellowship’s journey.
Players can control three heroes:
- Eradan, a Dúnedain Ranger focused on bows, swords, stealth and precision.
- Andriel, an Elven Loremaster who provides magical support, healing and area-of-effect abilities.
- Farin, a Dwarven Champion built around heavy melee attacks and durability.
The character design also gives the game a straightforward cooperative structure. Players can switch between the three heroes and build their characters through skills, abilities, weapons and armour.
Co-op remains central to the experience
One of War in the North’s defining features was its focus on cooperative play, and that remains part of the Legacy Edition.
The Steam release supports single-player, online co-op and shared or split-screen co-op. Up to three players can form the fellowship, allowing each player to take one of the game’s three heroes. Steam also lists Remote Play Together among the supported features.
The game also includes 46 Steam achievements and Steam Cloud support.
That makes the Legacy Edition more than a single-player nostalgia release. Its cooperative design remains an important part of what separates War in the North from many other Lord of the Rings games.
Familiar faces meet a separate Tolkien-era story
The campaign moves through several recognisable Middle-earth locations, including Rivendell, Lórien, the Lonely Mountain and Mirkwood.
Players can also encounter established characters including Aragorn, Gandalf and Elrond. The main playable characters, however, are original heroes created for this particular story.
The campaign also includes Beleram, a Great Eagle that players can call upon during the adventure.
Combat is built around action-RPG mechanics. Players fight Orcs, Trolls, Wargs, Barrow-wights and other enemies while developing their characters and collecting equipment.
What the Legacy Edition requires on PC
The PC requirements show that this is a release intended for modern 64-bit Windows systems rather than the hardware environment of the original 2011 game.
The Steam listing requires Windows 11, a 64-bit processor and DirectX 12. Minimum requirements include an Intel Core i5-6400 or AMD Ryzen 5 3600, 8GB of RAM and either an Nvidia GeForce GTX 970 or AMD Radeon R9 290X. The game requires 25GB of available storage.
Recommended hardware increases the requirements to an Intel Core i5-12400F or AMD Ryzen 5 5600X, 16GB of RAM and an Nvidia GeForce RTX 2060 or AMD Radeon RX 6600.

Why the Steam return matters
The most interesting part of the release is not simply that an older Lord of the Rings game has received a new edition.
The original PC version was retired from Steam and was therefore no longer available for normal purchase through the platform. SteamDB continues to identify the original release as retired.
The Legacy Edition creates a new route to the game for PC players who missed it the first time around.
That distinction also matters for existing owners. The Steam store lists the Legacy Edition as a separate product, rather than describing it as an update to the retired version. Players should therefore check their Steam library and the new product listing rather than assuming the new edition automatically replaces an existing copy.
It is also important not to describe the release as a full remake without qualification. Aspyr’s Steam listing calls it the Legacy Edition and details its gameplay and technical requirements, but the available official listing does not describe it as a complete remake or provide a detailed technical breakdown of changes from the 2011 release.
What about South Africa?
South African pricing and availability had not been confirmed at the time of publication.
The Steam store does offer the Legacy Edition digitally, but the price displayed can vary according to the Steam region and currency. The international store information available for this report should therefore not be presented as a South African recommended retail price.
For South African players, the digital PC release could make the game considerably easier to obtain than the retired original, but the actual cost will depend on the regional Steam listing.
There is another practical consideration for local players: online co-op requires an internet connection, while the game also supports local shared or split-screen co-op. That gives players an option to enjoy the three-person fellowship without relying entirely on online connectivity.
A second chance for an overlooked Middle-earth adventure
The Lord of the Rings: War in the North occupies an unusual place in the franchise’s gaming history. It is not another retelling of the Fellowship’s journey. Instead, it tells a parallel story that takes place during the same broader conflict.
The Legacy Edition gives a new generation of PC players access to that adventure through Steam after the original versions retirement.
For players interested in Tolkien games, the return is particularly notable because the game was built around cooperative action rather than simply adapting the films’ best-known battles. Its three playable heroes, RPG progression and co-op structure remain central to the experience.
South African pricing and availability had not been confirmed at the time of publication, so local buyers should check the regional Steam store before purchasing.
