Filmora sits somewhere between those two categories. It uses a familiar timeline for arranging video, audio, titles and effects, but places a strong emphasis on drag-and-drop controls and automated tools. Its current library includes more than 2.9 million creative assets across effects and other media.
That approach could suit YouTubers, small businesses, educators and social-media creators who need more control than a basic phone editor provides. It may also appeal to users who do not need the deeper workflow and project-management tools available in professional editing suites.
An independent 2026 TechRadar review found Filmora relatively straightforward once the user becomes familiar with the interface. The review also noted that the large number of tools can make the workspace feel busy at first.
Filmora 15 adds AI Extend and animated charts
Filmora 15 expands the software beyond straightforward cutting, transitions and effects.
AI Extend can continue a video or audio clip beyond its existing endpoint. A creator could use it when a shot ends slightly too early for an edit or when more material is needed to complete a transition. The result comes from generative AI, so users should check generated frames carefully before including them in a finished project.
Filmora 15 also introduces Animated Charts. Users can import data and turn it into animated visualisations without building the graphics manually. This could prove useful for business presentations, explainers and YouTube videos that need to communicate statistics visually.
Other additions include a Pen Tool, source and timeline preview editing, dual-timeline workflows and the ability to import projects as subprojects. These features give users more control when a project becomes too complicated for a single basic timeline.
Planar tracking can attach graphics to moving surfaces
Filmora includes planar tracking for effects that need to follow a flat surface as it moves through a scene.
A creator could place a graphic onto a moving billboard, replace content on a computer screen or obscure a vehicle registration plate. The tracking system follows the surface instead of forcing the editor to reposition the graphic frame by frame.
This type of tool previously required more specialised visual-effects software. Including it inside a general-purpose editor broadens the type of work Filmora users can attempt without leaving the application.
Tracking still requires careful checking. Motion blur, changing lighting, objects moving in front of the tracked surface and rapid camera movement can all make automated tracking more difficult.
Video stabilisation targets shaky footage
Filmora also includes video stabilisation for footage captured with phones, action cameras and handheld cameras. The software analyses movement in the clip and attempts to reduce unwanted shake.
Stabilisation can improve footage that contains small hand movements, but it cannot rescue every recording. Strong motion blur or major camera movement may remain visible after processing. Heavy stabilisation can also require cropping the edges of the original frame.
Creators should therefore treat stabilisation as a correction tool rather than a replacement for stable filming techniques.
AI tools use credits on some plans
Filmora’s AI features introduce another cost beyond the traditional software licence.
The current Advanced plan includes 1,000 Filmora AI credits each month for more than 20 AI-powered features. Those credits can fund tools including AI video generation, text-to-speech, image-to-video functions and other generative features.
This distinction matters because purchasing Filmora does not necessarily provide unlimited use of every AI function. Some tools consume credits each time a user runs them.
Creators planning to rely heavily on AI generation should therefore look beyond the headline subscription price. They should estimate how often they will use those tools and how quickly their monthly credits could run out.
Traditional editing functions do not face the same type of usage limit.
The free version adds a watermark to exports
Filmora offers a free route for people who want to test the editor before buying it.
Users can access the editing interface and experiment with many features without purchasing a licence. However, the free version adds a Filmora watermark to exported videos.
This makes the free edition useful for learning the interface and testing whether the software works well on a particular computer. It is less useful for publishing finished commercial or client work.
Trying the free version first is particularly sensible for South African users. Video editing places a heavy load on the processor, graphics hardware, memory and storage. A specification sheet cannot guarantee that a particular laptop will provide a smooth editing experience.
16GB of RAM makes more sense for 4K editing
Filmora can run on relatively modest Windows hardware, but editing high-resolution footage requires more resources.
The current Windows requirements specify a minimum of 8GB of RAM, while 16GB is recommended for HD and 4K editing. Wondershare recommends at least an Intel 9th-generation processor for smoother HD and 4K work, although the minimum requirement starts with an Intel sixth-generation processor or AMD Ryzen 3 1300X.
Filmora also requires at least 10GB of storage for installation. An SSD is recommended for high-resolution editing. The software can work with 8K video, but the recommended hardware rises significantly for these projects.
The editor supports common formats including MP4, MOV, MKV, AVI and WebM. Its output options include 4K MP4, MOV and MKV files, while selected formats can reach 8K.
A South African creator buying a computer specifically for Filmora should not target the minimum specification. More RAM and fast SSD storage will provide greater room for larger projects and higher-resolution footage.
Filmora pricing needs careful reading
Wondershare sells Filmora through subscription and perpetual licence options.
The official store currently lists the Advanced plan at US$59.99 per year. It includes 1,000 AI credits each month, 10GB of cloud storage and ongoing version upgrades. The subscription renews automatically unless the customer cancels it.
A Perpetual plan is also available with a one-time payment. The official store currently displays a promotional US$79.99 price. However, the licence covers Filmora 15 updates only rather than providing every future major version indefinitely.
That distinction deserves attention. “Perpetual” means the purchased software licence does not expire. It does not mean that the buyer automatically receives Filmora 16, 17 and every later major release.
Wondershare also changes promotions and pricing over time. South African buyers should therefore check the amount shown at checkout rather than relying on prices from an older article.
TechnologyBlog.co.za has not converted the US prices directly into rand. A simple currency conversion may not match the final card charge because exchange rates, bank fees and taxes can affect the total.
Watch the automatic renewal terms
Filmora’s subscription plans renew automatically unless the customer cancels them.
Wondershare allows users to cancel through its Account Centre or customer support. Cancellation stops the next renewal while access continues according to the applicable subscription terms.
The refund terms need closer attention. Wondershare provides a 30-day refund policy for qualifying initial purchases, but its published subscription terms state that the 30-day policy does not apply to auto-renewal charges.
That makes the renewal date important. Users who decide not to continue should cancel before Wondershare processes the next payment rather than relying on a refund afterwards.
South African customers may also face exchange-rate changes between the original purchase and renewal. A subscription that costs the same number of US dollars could result in a different rand charge a year later.
Creative assets come with licensing conditions
Filmora’s large asset library is one of its attractions, but creators should not assume that every included resource carries the same commercial-use rights.
Wondershare distinguishes between AI-generated and conventional resources. Its current documentation states that non-AI music, sound effects, transitions and other assets marked for commercial use can appear in commercial projects. Some AI-generated resources have different restrictions.
The distinction becomes particularly important for businesses and professional creators. A tool being available inside paid software does not automatically mean that every generated image, sticker, sound or video element carries unrestricted commercial rights.
Anyone producing advertising, client work or monetised content should check the licence attached to the exact asset before publishing it.
AI features also raise privacy questions
Traditional desktop editing often keeps source footage on the user’s computer. AI-powered features can introduce cloud processing and additional data handling.
Wondershare’s privacy policy for its AI video services covers Filmora and other video products. The policy states that the company may collect text, images, video and audio that users upload when they use generative or interactive features. It may also process metadata and, for relevant functions, facial images or voice-related information.
The policy states that personal information may primarily reside on servers in the United States, European Union and Singapore. The company also uses service providers in other locations.
This deserves particular attention when editing confidential company footage or material containing customer and employee information. Businesses should understand which Filmora features upload content before using AI processing on sensitive projects.
Local desktop editing and cloud-based AI processing should not be treated as the same privacy scenario.
Filmora has a strong Trustpilot score, but billing complaints appear
Filmora held a 4.2 out of 5 Trustpilot score from 15,622 reviews when checked on 11 August 2026. Around 67% of reviews carried five stars, while 13% carried one star.
Many reviewers praise the software’s accessibility and editing features. Trustpilot’s summary also identifies dissatisfaction around subscriptions, pricing and unexpected charges among some users.
Wondershare actively invites customers to leave Trustpilot reviews and had replied to 99% of negative reviews on the profile when checked.
Customer reviews provide useful information about support and billing experiences, but they do not replace controlled software testing. They also cannot establish whether Filmora will perform well on a specific computer or suit a particular editing workflow.
