Valdrax Beyond the Rift brings dark-fantasy RTS strategy to Steam Early Access

Valdrax Beyond the Rift is scheduled to enter Steam Early Access on 11 August 2026, giving PC strategy players a new dark-fantasy RTS built around settlement management, tactical combat, procedural maps and permanent unit death.

Developed and published by solo developer Ganea Ion, the game starts players with little more than a Settlement Cart. From there, they must establish a settlement, gather resources, build production infrastructure, equip soldiers and eventually take their forces beyond the safety of their walls.

The Steam listing identifies the game as an Early Access strategy and simulation title, with city-building, real-time strategy, tactical combat and procedural-generation elements.

Building a kingdom is only the beginning

The core gameplay loop combines settlement construction with resource management and military preparation.

Players begin by choosing where to establish their settlement before gathering materials such as wood and stone. The game then expands into production and military management, including forging weapons and recruiting and training soldiers.

The developer describes a resource chain that runs from raw materials such as iron through to forged weapons and equipped troops. That economic layer feeds directly into the game’s military systems rather than existing as a separate city-building component.

Combat is designed around tactical control of platoons, including formations, spacing and cycling of rows.

That becomes particularly important because Valdrax Beyond the Rift uses permanent death. Units lost in battle do not simply return after the encounter, meaning experienced soldiers can become strategically valuable assets that players need to protect.

The developer specifically positions veteran troops as more valuable than newly recruited replacements, adding a longer-term consequence to battlefield decisions.

No two maps are intended to play the same

Procedural variation is another major component of the game.

Enemy camps, resource deposits, forests and stone outcroppings can be re-positioned between playthroughs. This means players cannot rely entirely on memorising resource locations or enemy positions from an earlier campaign.

Instead, the intention is to make adaptation part of the strategy.

Beyond the main settlement, players can undertake expeditions through three tiers of maps: smaller raids, larger campaigns and deeper dungeon runs. These expeditions provide access to increasingly dangerous encounters and rare resources, including Arcane Crystals.

Roman and Celtic influences meet dark fantasy

The game’s setting draws inspiration from Celtic and Roman military traditions while placing those influences within a fantasy world populated by demons and mythical creatures.

The expedition system eventually allows players to encounter creatures including Golems, Werewolves, Vampires and Dragons. Arcane Crystals are used to access the game’s more powerful supernatural forces.

At the center of the campaign is the Demon Lord, an enemy that the developer describes as capable of sending scouts, adapting its armies and becoming more dangerous as the player’s kingdom expands.

Players can also eventually seek out Valdrax, the ancient dragon that gives the game its name. Rather than serving as the final enemy, Valdrax is presented as a powerful ally who can be brought into the final confrontation.

Early Access is intended to last six to 12 months

Ganea Ion says the game is being released through Early Access because the project is being developed as a solo undertaking and requires player feedback to balance its factions, economy and AI behavior.

According to the developer’s Steam Early Access information, the current version contains the core RTS loop of base building, resource gathering and tactical combat, alongside the Expedition & Logistics system and its temporary storage wagon mechanics.

The first expedition map is described by the developer as a complete playable vertical slice of the game’s expedition concept.

The planned Early Access period is approximately six to 12 months.

The developer also lists several areas planned for the eventual full release, including at least two additional expedition maps, an expanded technology progression system, more detailed economic controls such as civilian work schedules and soldier wages, improved AI and full Steam achievements.

The game’s development has already included player feedback. Following its Steam Next Fest demo, the developer announced that the demo would be retired while development shifted towards system refactoring, balance improvements and deeper tactical mechanics, including the Expedition & Logistics system.

AI was used during development

One detail worth noting for prospective players is the game’s AI-generated content disclosure.

According to the Steam listing, Ganea Ion used generative AI tools during development for certain non-interactive material, including some UI icons, character artwork, localisation and translations, store assets and parts of the store description.

The developer states that this AI-assisted material was reviewed and edited before inclusion. It also explicitly states that the game does not use AI to generate content or code during gameplay and does not connect to a third-party AI service while being played.

This distinction matters because the AI disclosure concerns the game’s development and presentation assets rather than an AI system operating inside the gameplay experience.

PC requirements are within reach of mainstream gaming hardware

The minimum PC requirements listed on Steam call for Windows 10 64-bit, an Intel Core i5-8400 or AMD Ryzen 5 2600 processor, 8GB of RAM and either Intel Iris Xe, NVIDIA GTX 1050 or AMD RX 560 graphics.

The recommended configuration increases memory to 16GB and calls for an Intel Core i7-8700 or AMD Ryzen 5 3600 processor, alongside a GTX 1660 or AMD RX 5600 XT with 6GB of graphics memory.

Both configurations require DirectX 11 and 5GB of available storage.

For South African PC gamers, the listed requirements are useful because they do not demand a current high-end gaming PC on paper. However, these are developer-provided requirements rather than independent performance testing, so they should not be interpreted as a guarantee of a particular frame rate or graphical setting.

What South African players need to know

The Steam listing schedules Valdrax Beyond the Rift for Early Access on 11 August 2026. At the time of checking, however, Steam still indicated that the game was not yet available and that it was expected to unlock shortly.

South African pricing and availability had not been confirmed at the time of publication.

The developer also states that the Early Access price is expected to be lower than the eventual full-release price, with a moderate price increase planned when additional content and polish have been added.

No South African retail distribution, local publisher, local recommended price or specific South African support arrangements were identified in the available sources.

For local PC players, the more immediate consideration is therefore whether their existing hardware meets the listed requirements and whether the Steam release has unlocked in their region.

A high-risk RTS built around adaptation

The interesting aspect of Valdrax Beyond the Rift is that several of its systems reinforce the same design philosophy.

Procedurally changing maps reduce the value of memorising layouts. Permanent death makes veteran units worth protecting. The expedition system creates reasons to leave the settlement rather than simply expanding its defences, while resource chains tie economic decisions directly to military strength.

That combination could make individual campaigns considerably less predictable than a traditional city-building RTS, although the game’s Early Access status means the balance and systems are still subject to change.

The developer says the game is expected to remain in Early Access for approximately six to 12 months, with additional maps, deeper economic and progression systems, AI improvements and Steam achievements planned for the full release.

For players who enjoy the combination of settlement management and tactical warfare, Valdrax Beyond the Rift is one to watch as it enters its next stage of development.
