Samsung Odyssey G6 hits 1,100Hz — but the headline number comes with a catch

The Samsung Odyssey G6 has pushed gaming-monitor refresh rates into four digits, with Samsung claiming a maximum of 1,100Hz on its latest 27-inch competitive gaming display.

That number is real, but there is an important detail.

The Odyssey G6 reaches 1,100Hz only when running in its lower-resolution HD Dual Mode. At its sharper native QHD resolution, the monitor runs at up to 600Hz.

Samsung first showed the G60H earlier in 2026 with a 1,040Hz ceiling. The company has now increased the final launch specification to 1,100Hz as part of its 2027 Odyssey gaming-monitor range.

The updated monitor appeared at Gamescom 2026 and is also part of Samsung’s IFA 2026 display push.

For competitive PC gamers, 1,100Hz is an eye-catching milestone.

For almost everyone else, the more interesting question is whether a monitor this fast can deliver a meaningful advantage outside elite esports.

Samsung Odyssey G6 reaches 1,100Hz in HD mode

The Samsung Odyssey G6, model G60H, uses a 27-inch Fast IPS panel.

Its native resolution is 2560 × 1440, commonly known as QHD or 1440p.

At that resolution, Samsung supports refresh rates of up to 600Hz.

Dual Mode lets players sacrifice resolution for additional speed.

Switching to HD mode raises the maximum refresh rate to 1,100Hz.

That makes the G60H the first gaming monitor Samsung says can exceed the 1,000Hz barrier and reach 1,100Hz.

Samsung originally announced a 1,040Hz maximum for the same model earlier this year.

The final commercial specification therefore goes slightly further.

What does 1,100Hz actually mean?

A monitor’s refresh rate tells you how many times it can update the image every second.

A 60Hz display refreshes 60 times per second.

A 144Hz monitor does it 144 times.

The Samsung Odyssey G6 can theoretically update the screen 1,100 times per second in its fastest mode.

That does not automatically mean a game will run at 1,100 frames per second.

The computer still needs to produce those frames.

If a graphics card only renders 300fps, a 1,100Hz monitor cannot invent the missing game frames in the same way that some frame-generation technologies can.

The biggest benefit therefore appears when a powerful PC produces extremely high frame rates in lightweight competitive games.

That immediately narrows the target audience.

Cyberpunk 2077 with every visual setting turned up is not the obvious use case.

Counter-Strike-style competitive shooters are.

Why competitive gamers chase extreme refresh rates

At ordinary desktop speeds, jumping from 60Hz to 144Hz can feel dramatic.

Movement looks smoother.

Mouse input feels more immediate.

Fast camera turns become easier to follow.

The gains become progressively smaller as refresh rates climb.

Moving from 500Hz to 600Hz does not transform the experience in the same way that moving from 60Hz to 144Hz does.

The difference still exists.

For professional esports players, even small reductions in display latency can matter.

A player tracking an opponent through a rapid camera movement wants the newest possible image on screen.

A monitor that refreshes more often can present newer information sooner.

That advantage may only be tiny.

In a competitive environment where players already optimise mice, keyboards, frame rates and network latency, tiny advantages are exactly what manufacturers target.

The real battle is 600Hz QHD versus 1,100Hz HD

The most interesting feature of the Samsung Odyssey G6 may not be 1,100Hz itself.

It is the choice between resolution and speed.

At QHD, players get 2560 × 1440 pixels and up to 600Hz.

That is already an extraordinary refresh rate.

Switching to the faster mode reduces image resolution but raises the ceiling to 1,100Hz.

The decision will depend on the game.

A competitive shooter may benefit from the highest possible refresh rate.

A slower game with detailed environments may look much better at QHD.

Samsung’s Dual Mode approach lets one monitor serve both priorities.

That is more useful than simply advertising 1,100Hz and forcing players to use it all the time.

The Odyssey G6 uses Fast IPS rather than OLED

Samsung has chosen a Fast IPS panel for the G60H.

That is significant because much of the premium gaming-monitor market has moved towards OLED.

OLED offers excellent black levels and extremely fast pixel response.

However, IPS panels remain strong choices for high-refresh competitive monitors.

Samsung lists a 1ms response time for the G60H.

Refresh rate and response time are not the same thing.

Refresh rate measures how frequently the screen receives a new image.

Pixel response measures how quickly the pixels themselves change state.

A very high refresh rate does not help much if the panel cannot change pixels quickly enough to keep up.

Samsung’s combination of Fast IPS and high refresh rates aims to maintain usable motion clarity at those extreme speeds.

Independent testing will ultimately show how well it works.

1,100Hz will demand an unusually powerful gaming PC

There is another catch behind the specification.

Driving a monitor at 1,100Hz is one thing.

Producing enough game frames to take advantage of it is another.

Competitive games often run at much higher frame rates than visually demanding single-player titles.

Players commonly lower graphics settings to reduce latency and increase FPS.

Even then, sustaining frame rates approaching four figures requires an exceptionally fast system.

CPU performance becomes especially important.

At very high frame rates, the graphics card may stop being the main bottleneck.

The processor must prepare game logic, physics, draw calls and other work quickly enough to keep feeding the GPU.

Memory performance and game-engine efficiency also matter.

That means the Odyssey G6 will make the most sense when paired with high-end gaming hardware and carefully tuned competitive titles.

A mainstream gaming laptop will not suddenly become a 1,100fps esports machine because you connect this monitor.

Samsung supports both G-SYNC and FreeSync

The Odyssey G6 will support Nvidia G-SYNC Compatible and AMD FreeSync Premium Pro.

Variable refresh-rate technologies help synchronise the monitor with the graphics card.

Without synchronisation, the monitor can begin displaying one frame before the GPU has finished replacing the previous one.

That creates screen tearing.

Variable refresh rate adjusts the display timing to follow the GPU more closely.

At the extreme frame rates Samsung is targeting, smooth delivery remains important even when the headline specification grabs most of the attention.

The monitor also supports HDR10+ Gaming.

Samsung has been expanding HDR10+ Gaming support across games and displays as part of its wider Odyssey strategy.

Samsung is also building a 42-inch curved OLED monster

The 1,100Hz G6 is not the only unusual display in Samsung’s new Odyssey range.

The company has also unveiled the Odyssey OLED G7 G75SJ.

Samsung describes it as the world’s first 42-inch 16:9 curved OLED gaming monitor.

It combines a 4K OLED panel, 1000R curvature and a 165Hz refresh rate.

The monitor targets a completely different type of player.

The G6 prioritises speed.

The 42-inch OLED G7 prioritises scale and immersion.

Samsung says the 42-inch screen provides around 72% more display area than its previous 32-inch model.

For racing games, RPGs and large open-world titles, that bigger curved display may prove more appealing than chasing four-digit refresh rates.

The two products show how fragmented premium gaming displays have become.

There is no single specification that defines the best monitor anymore.

The new Odyssey OLED G9 pushes 49 inches to 360Hz

Samsung has also updated its ultra-wide flagship.

The new 49-inch Odyssey OLED G9 combines Dual QHD resolution with a 360Hz refresh rate.

Dual QHD means a resolution of 5120 × 1440.

That gives players a very wide desktop and gaming view.

Samsung also supports a Dual HD mode that can reach up to 720Hz.

The G9 uses Samsung’s fifth-generation QD-OLED technology.

Samsung says the updated panel improves efficiency and longevity while using an RGB Stripe sub-pixel layout designed to improve text clarity.

The monitor also claims a 0.03ms grey-to-grey response time.

Again, it serves a different audience.

Someone playing competitive shooters may prefer the smaller G6.

Someone building a simulator or immersive desktop setup may favour the G9.

The Odyssey OLED G8 gets three refresh-rate modes

The 32-inch Odyssey OLED G8 takes another approach.

It starts with 4K resolution at up to 360Hz.

Players can switch to QHD at up to 520Hz.

Dropping to Full HD raises the ceiling again to 680Hz.

Samsung calls this Triple Mode.

The idea mirrors what the G6 does with Dual Mode.

Gamers can choose between higher resolution and higher refresh rates depending on the title.

The OLED G8 also includes DisplayPort 2.1, HDMI, USB-C with up to 98W Power Delivery and KVM support.

That makes it more suitable for mixed gaming and productivity setups.

Samsung is clearly moving away from the idea that one fixed resolution and refresh rate must define a monitor.

Does anyone actually need 1,100Hz?

For most gamers, no.

A good 144Hz, 165Hz or 240Hz monitor already provides a smooth gaming experience.

Competitive players may benefit from 360Hz, 500Hz and beyond.

But each step upward produces a smaller improvement.

That does not make the Samsung Odyssey G6 pointless.

Extreme products often show where technology is heading before the capability becomes mainstream.

High-refresh monitors were once niche.

Today, 120Hz screens appear on phones, laptops and televisions.

Gaming monitors regularly reach 240Hz and 360Hz.

Samsung is now exploring what happens when panel speed stops being an obvious limitation.

The answer may eventually influence products far below the G6.

The specification also exposes a marketing trap

Consumers should pay close attention to how manufacturers advertise Dual Mode displays.

The phrase 1,100Hz gaming monitor sounds as though the G6 runs at 1,100Hz under every condition.

It does not.

The monitor reaches that figure in HD mode.

Its QHD mode tops out at 600Hz.

That distinction does not undermine the achievement.

A 600Hz QHD IPS panel is already extremely fast.

But buyers should understand what they are getting.

Resolution, refresh rate and frame rate interact.

Looking at one number without the others can create the wrong impression.

The same applies when comparing monitors from different manufacturers.

Samsung continues to push display technology in different directions

Samsung already sells displays aimed at very different users.

Its ViewFinity line focuses on productivity and workspace needs rather than esports.

Odyssey sits at the opposite end of Samsung’s monitor strategy.

Here, performance and gaming features take priority.

The new range stretches that strategy further.

One model chases 1,100Hz.

Another offers a 42-inch curved OLED panel.

Others combine 4K and ultra-wide resolutions with increasingly high refresh rates.

Samsung is not trying to convince every gamer to buy the same screen.

It is creating increasingly specialised displays for different styles of play.

What South African gamers need to know

Samsung has not yet confirmed South African launch timing for the final Samsung Odyssey G6 1,100Hz specification.

The company says availability will vary by market.

Global rollout for the G6 is planned for the second half of 2026.

Samsung has also not announced final market-by-market availability for the rest of the 2027 Odyssey range.

That means South African gamers should not assume the full lineup will arrive locally at the same time as larger international markets.

Samsung does have an established gaming-monitor presence in South Africa.

Its South African newsroom also highlighted the earlier G60H specification when Samsung initially showed the monitor at 1,040Hz.

That makes a future local release plausible.

It is not confirmation.

The Samsung Odyssey G6 is less about necessity than possibility

Very few people need a 1,100Hz monitor.

Even fewer have a PC that can drive suitable games fast enough to make full use of it.

That almost misses the point.

The Samsung Odyssey G6 shows how far manufacturers can now push display speed when they design around competitive gaming rather than resolution alone.

The final specification also makes the trade-off unusually clear.

Want sharper QHD visuals? Run at up to 600Hz.

Want the fastest possible screen? Drop to HD and unlock up to 1,100Hz.

For most gamers, either figure sounds excessive.

For esports players chasing every possible millisecond, excessive is exactly the market Samsung is targeting.
