Samsung Galaxy Z Flip8 puts Gemini and more apps on its 4.1-inch FlexWindow
Samsung has expanded what users can do without opening a foldable phone with the Galaxy Z Flip8. Its 4.1-inch FlexWindow can now run more applications, display personalised information and provide access to Gemini directly from the cover screen.
The Galaxy Z Flip8 also becomes Samsung’s thinnest and lightest Flip to date. It weighs 180g and measures 6.1mm thick when unfolded, while opening the device reveals a 6.9-inch main display.
Samsung equips the phone with an Exynos 2600 processor, 12GB of memory and 256GB of storage on the current South African configuration. A 4,300mAh battery powers the device, while photography centres on a 50MP main camera and 12MP ultra-wide camera.
The Galaxy Z Flip8 forms part of Samsung’s latest foldable generation and is now listed on Samsung South Africa’s website. Samsung also includes it in the company’s current local Galaxy Z rollout alongside its new Fold and Galaxy Watch products.

FlexWindow becomes more than a notification screen
The 4.1-inch FlexWindow sits at the centre of Samsung’s approach to the Galaxy Z Flip8.
Users can access more applications from the cover display without opening the phone. Samsung has also redesigned the interface under One UI 9 so the FlexWindow can more closely match the layout and appearance of the main screen.
That changes the role of the cover screen. It no longer exists mainly for checking notifications, controlling music or looking at the time.
Users can create an application tray, select frequently used apps and configure widgets directly on FlexWindow. Samsung also lets users create custom cards around information they want to see regularly.
This makes the Flip form factor more useful when closed. A compact folding phone loses some of its appeal if users need to open it for every basic task.
Samsung’s latest software attempts to reduce how often that happens.
Gemini can work directly from FlexWindow
Samsung has integrated Google Gemini more deeply into the Flip8 experience.
Users can access Gemini through the side key or voice requests while the device remains folded. The assistant can then help with supported actions without forcing the user to move immediately to the larger display.
This fits the broader purpose of FlexWindow. Samsung wants the outside display to handle short interactions while the phone remains compact.
Some Gemini features depend on an internet connection, Google account and supported language or region. Users should therefore check the availability of specific AI functions rather than assuming every advertised feature will work identically in South Africa.
Samsung also includes a six-month Google AI Pro trial with the Galaxy Z Flip8 under its current offer. The South African product page states that the promotion provides expanded Gemini access and 5TB of cloud storage. Subscription charges apply after the trial unless the customer cancels it.
Now Brief puts personalised information on the outside screen
Now Brief provides another use for FlexWindow.
The feature can display personalised summaries based on information such as schedules, routines, weather and health data. Users can customise which types of information they want the phone to surface.
The idea is to reduce the need to open several applications individually.
A morning card could show the day’s weather and calendar information. Other cards could display health data or information relevant to the user’s routine.
Samsung’s implementation depends on supported services and the data users allow the system to access. AI features that work with personal information should therefore receive the same privacy consideration as other cloud-connected assistants.
Users should review their account and AI processing settings before allowing sensitive information into automated summaries.
At 180g, this is Samsung’s lightest Flip
The Galaxy Z Flip8 weighs 180g, making it the lightest Galaxy Z Flip Samsung has released.
It measures 6.1mm thick when opened. Samsung’s official comparison shows that the device is 8g lighter and 0.4mm thinner than the previous Flip generation.
Those reductions matter because portability is one of the main reasons to choose a clamshell foldable.
The Flip8 folds into a much shorter shape than a conventional large-screen smartphone. Reducing weight further can make it easier to carry in smaller pockets and bags.
The phone still opens into a 6.9-inch main display, so the compact folded shape does not require users to work permanently on a small screen.

Armor Aluminum and a revised hinge support the folding design
Samsung surrounds the Galaxy Z Flip8 with an Armor Aluminum frame.
Corning Gorilla Glass Victus 2 protects the exterior cover screen, while Samsung uses its Armor FlexHinge for the folding mechanism.
Samsung describes the hinge material as highly durable while allowing a thinner structure.
Physical specifications can provide useful information about construction, but they cannot establish how the hinge or folding display will behave after several years of daily use.
Foldable phones place repeated mechanical stress on components that conventional smartphones do not need.

The IP48 rating still requires care around fine dust
Samsung gives the Galaxy Z Flip8 an IP48 rating.
The water-resistance component protects the phone against common accidental exposure under Samsung’s stated laboratory conditions. Samsung tests its water resistance in fresh water at depths of up to 1.5 metres for up to 30 minutes.
The first digit remains an important limitation.
IP48 does not provide complete protection against fine dust. Sand and small particles can therefore remain a concern around the folding mechanism.
Users should not treat the phone as dustproof simply because it carries an IP rating.
Water resistance can also diminish as a device ages.
Exynos 2600 handles processing
Samsung uses its Exynos 2600 processor in the Galaxy Z Flip8.
The customised Galaxy implementation includes CPU, GPU and NPU resources for general computing, graphics and AI processing.
Samsung claims the NPU delivers a 41% performance improvement, while GPU performance increases by 25% and CPU performance by 30% compared with the Galaxy Z Flip7. These figures come from Samsung’s internal comparisons rather than TechnologyBlog.co.za testing.
The NPU plays an increasingly important role in Galaxy AI. Supported software can use dedicated AI hardware instead of sending every task through the CPU.
The processor also works with Samsung’s mDNIe display technology. Samsung uses the combination to manage image processing and power consumption.
TechnologyBlog.co.za has not benchmarked the Exynos 2600. Real performance will depend on applications, thermal conditions and software optimisation.
The main display reaches a stated 2,600 nits
Samsung rates the Flip8 display for peak brightness of up to 2,600 nits.
High peak brightness can improve visibility outdoors and enhance HDR highlights. It does not mean the screen runs continuously at 2,600 nits.
The main display measures 6.9 inches diagonally, while the outside FlexWindow measures 4.1 inches.
Samsung also uses its mobile Digital Natural Image engine to adjust colour and light representation.

A 50MP camera drives the FlexCam experience
The Galaxy Z Flip8 uses a 50MP main wide camera.
Samsung complements it with a 12MP ultra-wide camera and a 10MP camera inside the main display. The primary camera can also create a 2x optical-quality view using its high-resolution sensor.
The folding design gives Samsung another advantage beyond camera specifications.
Users can partly fold the phone and position it on a surface without a tripod. Samsung calls this FlexMode, while the broader camera system operates under the FlexCam name.
The outside screen can show a preview while users take photographs with the main rear camera. This lets the photographer use the stronger 50MP sensor for selfies instead of relying only on the internal front camera.
Auto Zoom can automatically change the frame when it detects people in a FlexMode shot. Samsung notes that low-light conditions, movement and subject distance can affect the feature.
Dual Preview lets the subject see the shot
The two-screen design also changes how someone photographs another person.
Dual Preview can show the frame on FlexWindow while the photographer uses the main display. The subject can therefore see how they appear before the photo or video is captured.
This can prove useful for creators working with another person without a separate monitor.
The Flip8 also supports a camcorder-style grip. Folding the phone partly and holding it horizontally places recording and zoom controls in a position designed to resemble a compact video camera.
These features use the folding hardware for more than simply reducing the size of the phone.
Horizontal Lock targets steadier video
Samsung includes Super Steady with Horizontal Lock on the Galaxy Z Flip8.
The system detects the horizon and attempts to keep the image level even if the phone rotates while recording. Samsung says it can maintain the horizon through a full 360-degree rotation under supported conditions.
This could appeal to creators recording while walking, running or holding the device at unusual angles.
Electronic stabilisation still has limits. Rapid movement, low light and strong motion blur can affect the final result.

Dual Recording captures both sides of the camera
The Flip8 also supports Dual Recording.
The feature can capture the subject and the person filming at the same time. A split view shows both perspectives, while FlexWindow can provide another preview during recording.
Samsung has introduced Dual Recording across its latest foldable generation.
For the Flip8, the feature fits particularly well with its creator-oriented design. Someone recording a reaction, interview or social video can capture both perspectives without adding a second phone.
Users should still check the output resolution and framing requirements for the platform where they plan to publish the footage.
The battery has a 4,300mAh capacity
Samsung equips the Galaxy Z Flip8 with a 4,300mAh typical battery.
The company rates the device for up to 31 hours of video playback under its own test conditions.
The battery capacity itself has not changed from the Flip7. Samsung instead points to processor efficiency and display optimisation as part of its battery strategy.
Actual endurance will depend on screen brightness, mobile connectivity, camera use, gaming and how often the user relies on the main display.
Using FlexWindow for short interactions could reduce the need to activate the larger screen as frequently, but TechnologyBlog.co.za has not tested whether this creates a meaningful battery advantage in everyday use.
South African model currently has 256GB storage
Samsung South Africa currently lists the Galaxy Z Flip8 with 256GB of internal storage and 12GB of memory.
Samsung’s local FAQ identifies 256GB as the available storage configuration.
There is no microSD expansion, so buyers should consider how much local storage they need before choosing the device.
Users who record large amounts of video may fill 256GB more quickly than people who rely primarily on streaming and cloud storage.
Samsung’s six-month Google AI Pro offer also includes 5TB of cloud storage during the qualifying trial period. That storage becomes part of a paid subscription if the user keeps the service after the promotion ends.
Samsung promises up to seven OS upgrades
Samsung lists support for up to seven operating-system upgrades and security updates on the Galaxy Z Flip8.
The exact timing can vary according to the market, network provider and model.
Long software support adds value to an expensive smartphone because the device can continue receiving security fixes and newer Android features well beyond its launch year.
Foldables also depend on physical longevity. A seven-year software policy matters most when the battery, hinge and folding screen remain practical over the same period.

Its 6.9-inch main screen provides the space expected from a modern smartphone. Folding the device reduces its height considerably, while the 4.1-inch FlexWindow handles more basic interactions without reopening it.
Content creators may also see value in the form factor.
FlexMode provides a built-in stand. FlexWindow can serve as a camera preview, while Auto Zoom, Dual Preview, Dual Recording and Horizontal Lock expand the ways users can capture themselves without additional equipment.
The limitations remain important.
IP48 does not provide full fine-dust protection. The folding display requires more care than conventional glass, and 256GB is currently the only storage capacity Samsung South Africa lists for the device.
