BIXOLON History: From Samsung’s Mini-Printer Division to an Independent POS Specialist

BIXOLON’s origin predates the BIXOLON company name. Its official history starts in 1993 inside Samsung’s mini-printer business, producing printer mechanisms for electronic cash registers. POS-printer production followed in 1998, and BIXOLON was established as an independent company in 2002. That separation between divisional ancestry and corporate founding is central to the story.

The early products were built for transactions rather than home or office documents. Receipt and point-of-sale printers must survive high print volumes, fit into constrained counters, cut paper reliably and integrate with retail software and cash drawers. Those requirements pushed the business toward thermal printing and specialised mechanisms rather than conventional desktop inkjet or laser printing.

Barcode and label printing broadened the opportunity. BIXOLON’s chronology records barcode-printer production around the time of its 2002 spin-off, and the company later added mobile printers used by field workers, hospitality staff and logistics operations. The result was a portfolio organised around transactions and identification rather than around the paperless-office debate that defines general printer makers.

The spin-off mattered because it gave the printer unit its own brand, international subsidiaries and distribution relationships. BIXOLON could sell directly as a specialist rather than existing only as a Samsung internal business. Its current positioning in POS, mobile and Auto-ID printing follows that change.

BIXOLON’s history illustrates why “first product” terminology needs precision. Printer mechanisms appeared in 1993 under Samsung; BIXOLON as an independent company did not yet exist. Calling that a 1993 BIXOLON product without context would be misleading. The accurate narrative is a technology lineage that began inside Samsung, developed a POS-printing specialism and became an independent company in 2002.
