A New Jersey bookkeeper with a payroll machine: how ADP automated the paycheque

ADP started with a problem small-business owners still recognise: payroll has to be correct every time, even when the owner has more important work to do.

Henry Taub founded Automatic Payrolls, Inc. in Paterson, New Jersey, in 1949 after noticing that neighbourhood businesses needed help paying employees accurately and on schedule.

The first operation was not a software start-up in the modern sense. Payrolls were processed with bookkeeping machines, calculators, addressograph equipment and substantial manual work.

Punch cards turned outsourcing into automation

As business computing developed, Automatic Payrolls adopted punch-card machines and other data-processing technology.

Automation allowed one service bureau to process far more payrolls than manual bookkeeping alone could support.

The model also established an idea that became central to ADP: businesses could outsource repetitive administrative processing to a specialist with better technology and scale.

The name changed when payroll became data processing

Automatic Payrolls became Automatic Data Processing in 1958.

The change reflected a company that was using increasingly sophisticated computing infrastructure rather than operating only as a bookkeeping bureau.

The 1961 listing helped fund a national service network

ADP became a public company in 1961.

The business expanded across the United States and later internationally, building processing centres and sales operations close to employers.

Payroll regulations differ across jurisdictions, giving scale and compliance expertise additional value.

Mainframes made the service bureau a computing company

Large central computers transformed payroll processing during the 1960s and 1970s.

Instead of every employer purchasing and programming its own system, ADP could spread the cost of computing infrastructure across many clients.

This was an early form of shared business computing long before the phrase “cloud software” existed.

Payroll data naturally led into human resources

Once a provider manages employee records, tax withholding and pay information, adjacent HR functions become logical extensions.

ADP expanded into time and attendance, benefits, talent, tax services and broader human-capital management.

The company moved from processing the paycheque to managing more of the employee lifecycle.

The internet changed the interface, not the underlying responsibility

Self-service web portals and later mobile applications gave employees and managers direct access to information that previously moved through paper forms or payroll clerks.

ADP’s infrastructure moved towards online and cloud delivery, but the core requirement remained the same: calculate accurately, protect sensitive data and meet regulatory deadlines.

Data scale became a second asset

Serving a very large number of employers gives ADP a broad view of labour-market activity.

The company uses aggregated information in research and workforce analytics while maintaining systems designed around highly sensitive payroll and employee data.

Maria Black leads a company Henry Taub would recognise in one important way

Maria Black is ADP’s president and chief executive as of September 2026.

The products are far removed from Taub’s bookkeeping machines, but the customer problem is familiar: employers want complicated workforce administration to become easier and more reliable.

Seventy-seven years later, payroll is still mission-critical infrastructure

Payroll software rarely attracts the attention given to smartphones or AI accelerators, but failures affect people immediately.

That reliability requirement helped turn ADP from one New Jersey service bureau into a global human-capital-management technology company.
