How Formosa Sumco Technology evolved into its modern technology business
Formosa Sumco Technology was established in Taiwan in November 1995 as Formosa Komatsu Silicon, a joint venture involving Formosa Plastics interests and Japan’s Komatsu Electronic Metals.
How Formosa Sumco Technology developed
The venture was built to manufacture silicon wafers, including 200 mm products, and later expanded into 300 mm wafers. After SUMCO acquired control of Komatsu Electronic Metals in 2006, the Taiwanese company adopted the Formosa Sumco Technology name.
Formosa Sumco Technology in 2026
By 2026, FST remained a producer of 200 mm and 300 mm silicon wafers used as the starting material for semiconductor manufacturing.
Why the history matters
Its history illustrates the capital-intensive materials layer behind the chip industry: advanced processors still depend on extremely pure, precisely engineered silicon wafers before fabrication can begin.
