Two former colleagues wanted developers and operators to share one view: the history of Datadog

Olivier Pomel and Alexis Lê-Quôc founded Datadog in 2010 after working together at Wireless Generation and seeing how difficult it was for development and operations teams to understand the same production systems.

They created a cloud monitoring service that could collect metrics from increasingly distributed infrastructure and present them in one shared interface.

That starting point is useful context for understanding the modern Datadog. The company did not arrive at its current position in one jump; it accumulated technology, customers and operating knowledge through a series of distinct transitions.

Cloud infrastructure made old monitoring assumptions break down

Virtual machines, elastic cloud services and containers changed too quickly for monitoring systems designed around fixed servers. Datadog built integrations and agent-based telemetry for this more dynamic environment.

This shift also changed how customers consumed the technology. Instead of treating software or infrastructure as a one-off purchase, the relationship became more continuous, with updates, capacity and services delivered over time.

APM turned infrastructure monitoring into application observability

Datadog expanded into application performance monitoring, tracing and logs so customers could connect a slow user experience with the service or infrastructure event causing it.

The milestone widened Datadog’s software role from a point solution towards a broader workflow or platform. That usually matters because customers can connect more of their operations to one underlying data and application layer.

The 2019 IPO arrived as observability became a category

Datadog listed on Nasdaq in September 2019. By then, observability had become a major software category as cloud-native applications generated more metrics, logs and traces than traditional operations teams could inspect manually.

For Datadog, access to public markets was more than a branding milestone. It increased financial transparency and created another route to fund expansion, acquisitions or long-term product development.

Security and AI widened the telemetry platform

Datadog added cloud security, application security, user experience monitoring and AI-assisted analysis. The strategy relies on reusing the same telemetry across more operational questions rather than deploying a separate data pipeline for every tool.

This shift also changed how customers consumed the technology. Instead of treating software or infrastructure as a one-off purchase, the relationship became more continuous, with updates, capacity and services delivered over time.

One shared view became a multi-product platform

As of 18 September 2026, datadog is now an observability and security platform for cloud applications. Its history is rooted in the organisational problem its founders saw before the product existed: engineers responsible for building and running software need shared evidence when something goes wrong.

For readers following the brand today, the history explains why newer announcements often connect back to technology or business decisions made much earlier.

For TechnologyBlog.co.za, this page is intended to serve as the company-history cornerstone for future Datadog coverage, so product and company-news articles can link back to one factual brand background instead of repeating the full origin story.
