Pantum: A laser-printer company broadens its print stack

Pantum says it was founded in 2010 and launched its first printer that year at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing.

Unlike office brands that entered printing from cameras or copiers, Pantum was created around laser printers, consumables and the manufacturing chain behind them.

The company expanded from A4 monochrome devices into colour, multifunction and A3 products, while also building print-management services and a broader international sales network.

Laser printing depends on the interaction of controller electronics, imaging drums, toner, fusing, paper handling and firmware. Pantum’s strategy emphasizes control of more of that stack rather than acting only as a reseller of finished printers.

Its current business covers printer R&D, manufacturing, consumables and print-output solutions in more than 100 markets.

Pantum’s significance is its attempt to build a vertically integrated printer brand relatively late in the laser-printer era, competing through manufacturing control and international distribution rather than a legacy installed base.
