Qualcomm’s new Dragonwing Q-2390 and IQ-2390 push AI into smaller edge devices

Qualcomm has expanded its Dragonwing processor family with the Q-2390 and IQ-2390, targeting connected devices that need local AI and computer vision without the processing requirements of the company’s higher-end industrial platforms.

Announced on 1 September 2026 ahead of IFA in Berlin, the two processors combine application processing, AI acceleration, graphics, vision capabilities and a real-time RISC-V microcontroller on a single platform. Qualcomm is targeting equipment ranging from retail terminals and smart-home devices to industrial controllers, machine-vision systems and energy-management hardware.

The important part of the announcement is where Qualcomm wants this technology to go. Rather than reserving edge AI for expensive robots, high-performance industrial computers or premium consumer devices, the Q-2390 and IQ-2390 are intended for more constrained systems where cost, board space and power consumption matter.

Dragonwing Q-2390 targets commercial and consumer devices

The Dragonwing Q-2390 is the commercial member of the pair.

Qualcomm lists applications including in-store retail equipment, biometric payment and access-control systems, smart-home hubs, home robots, fitness devices and enterprise terminals.

Its processing hardware includes a quad-core CPU comprising one Arm Cortex-A78 core and three Cortex-A55 cores, running at up to 1.9GHz. It also includes an Adreno 704 GPU and Qualcomm Hexagon AI hardware rated at 1.1 TOPS.

Connectivity options include Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, dual Gigabit Ethernet with Time-Sensitive Networking, PCIe and USB. Qualcomm also offers a Q-2390M version with integrated LTE Cat 4 data connectivity.

Android, Ubuntu, Yocto Linux and Zephyr are supported across the platform’s application and real-time processing environments.

This combination makes the processor relevant to devices that need to analyse camera or sensor information locally, respond quickly and continue operating without sending every task to a remote cloud service.

IQ-2390 takes the same idea into industrial equipment

The Dragonwing IQ-2390 is the first processor in Qualcomm’s new IQ2 Series and adds features intended for industrial deployment.

Its target applications include industrial human-machine interfaces, gateways, programmable logic controller and CNC systems, machine vision, fire and HVAC controllers, EV charging equipment, energy-storage systems and electricity meters.

Qualcomm specifies an operating range of -30°C to 115°C, hardware ECC memory protection and industrial-grade packaging. The company also says the IQ2 platform is intended to receive long product-lifecycle support, with the IQ2 Series currently listed for support until 2036, subject to Qualcomm’s usual longevity-program conditions.

The IQ-2390 also includes two Gigabit Ethernet interfaces with Time-Sensitive Networking.

That matters for automation environments because deterministic networking is designed to make network timing more predictable — an important requirement when machines and control systems must coordinate actions rather than simply exchange ordinary internet traffic.
