The NAND invention that outgrew Toshiba: how Kioxia became a standalone flash-memory company
Kioxia is a relatively new corporate name attached to one of the oldest and most important flash-memory lineages.
The company’s history begins inside Toshiba, where engineer Fujio Masuoka and colleagues developed NAND flash technology during the 1980s.
Kioxia’s official timeline marks 1987 as the invention of the world’s first NAND flash memory.
NAND traded random access for density

Toshiba created Toshiba Memory Corporation in April 2017 and transferred the memory business into the new company.

A consortium later acquired control of the memory operation.
The Kioxia name arrived in 2019
Toshiba Memory changed its name to Kioxia in October 2019.
The brand combines the Japanese word kioku, meaning memory, with the Greek word axia, associated with value.
The name change completed the separation of identity from Toshiba.
SSDs moved the company closer to complete storage systems
Kioxia expanded from raw NAND into SSD products and controllers.
Its 2020 acquisition of the LITE-ON SSD business strengthened that system-level capability.
The 2024 listing created another corporate milestone
Kioxia Holdings listed on the Prime Market of the Tokyo Stock Exchange in December 2024.
The listing gave public investors direct access to a flash business whose technology history still stretches back to Toshiba’s research laboratories.
AI storage revived attention on NAND scale
AI systems create enormous persistent datasets even when their hottest working memory uses DRAM or HBM.
High-capacity NAND SSDs therefore remain important for training data, model storage and data-centre infrastructure.
A new name carrying an old invention
Kioxia’s corporate history is shorter than its technology history.
NAND was invented inside Toshiba, 3D flash extended the roadmap, and the 2017 separation eventually created the independent Kioxia identity.
