Aqara Camera G100 brings 2K smart security indoors and outdoors
The Aqara Camera G100 takes a flexible approach to home surveillance.
It is compact enough for indoor monitoring but carries an IP65 rating for suitable outdoor installations. Aqara combines that versatility with 2K video, a 140-degree field of view, infrared and colour night vision, two-way audio and local person detection.
However, the more interesting story may be what happens after the camera captures its video.
The G100 supports microSD recording, cloud storage and RTSP. It also works with Apple Home, Google Home, Amazon Alexa and Samsung SmartThings.
That gives homeowners several choices when deciding where footage goes and how the camera fits into a wider smart home.
The Aqara Camera G100 records at 2304 × 1296
The Aqara Camera G100 records video at a resolution of 2304 × 1296.
That places it in the commonly marketed 2K class and provides more recorded pixels than conventional 1920 × 1080 Full HD.
Resolution alone does not determine image quality. Lighting, compression, sensor performance and movement all influence what a security camera actually captures.
Nevertheless, the additional resolution can help when reviewing footage and trying to identify smaller details within the image.
Aqara uses H.264 video encoding for the G100.
A 140-degree field of view covers a broad area
The camera has a 140-degree diagonal field of view.
A wide field of view can reduce the number of cameras required to monitor a room or outdoor area.
That could make the G100 suitable for entrances, patios, garages and living areas where broad coverage is more important than concentrating on one narrow point.
Positioning still matters.
A wide-angle camera mounted in the wrong location can simply provide a larger view of an unimportant area.
Planning the installation around entrances and likely movement paths therefore remains important.
Night vision works with or without visible light

That distinction matters.
A security camera that reacts to every movement can generate alerts from vegetation, shadows, insects and other activity that does not necessarily require attention.
Person detection provides a more useful trigger for many home-security situations.
Aqara also offers additional cloud-based AI through its HomeGuardian service.
More advanced recognition features can include pets, vehicles, packages and faces, depending on the service and configuration being used.
Those cloud features should not be confused with the G100’s subscription-free local person detection.
Local microSD storage supports up to 512GB
The G100 does not force owners to rely entirely on cloud storage.
It supports a Class 10 or better microSD card with capacity up to 512GB.
The memory card is not included with the camera.
Local storage can be particularly useful for households that prefer footage to remain on their own hardware or want to reduce their dependence on subscription-based cloud recording.
There is still a security trade-off.
If footage exists only on the memory card inside the camera, losing or damaging the camera could also mean losing the recording.
Storage strategy should therefore form part of the overall security installation.
RTSP gives advanced users another option
The G100 also supports RTSP.
This is an important feature for more advanced smart-home users because it allows the camera’s video stream to work with compatible third-party platforms.
Aqara specifically identifies platforms including Home Assistant, Frigate and Blue Iris as potential applications for RTSP integration.
That gives the G100 a different character from security cameras that operate exclusively through a manufacturer’s own cloud platform.
Someone building a local home-automation or network-video system can potentially incorporate the camera into that wider setup.
Actual configuration will depend on the third-party platform and local network.
Apple HomeKit Secure Video is supported
Apple users get another integration option through HomeKit Secure Video.
The G100 can work with Apple Home for camera viewing and supported smart-home functionality.
There is an important resolution limitation.
Although the camera itself records at 2304 × 1296, Aqara specifies up to 1080p through HomeKit Secure Video.
Buying a 2K camera therefore does not mean every connected platform will necessarily use its full native resolution.
Google Home, Alexa and SmartThings broaden compatibility
Apple is not the only ecosystem supported.
Aqara also lists compatibility with Google Home, Amazon Alexa and Samsung SmartThings.
This broader support can make the G100 useful in homes that already contain smart devices from several manufacturers.
It also reduces the need to build an entire smart home around one ecosystem simply because of the security camera.
The Aqara Home app remains important for configuring Aqara-specific functions.
Wi-Fi 6 is supported on 2.4GHz
The G100 supports IEEE 802.11 b/g/n/ax Wi-Fi on the 2.4GHz band.
In other words, Wi-Fi 6 support does not mean the camera connects to a 5GHz Wi-Fi network.
For a security camera, 2.4GHz can have practical advantages because it generally offers greater range and better wall penetration than higher-frequency Wi-Fi.
That can matter when the G100 is installed outside while the wireless router remains indoors.
The camera also includes Bluetooth connectivity.
Bluetooth should not be confused with its main network connection. Wi-Fi handles normal network communication and video connectivity.
IP65 protection allows indoor or outdoor installation
The IP65 rating is one of the specifications that makes the G100 particularly flexible.
It provides protection against dust ingress and water jets, allowing the camera to be installed in appropriate outdoor positions.
Aqara specifies an operating temperature range from -10°C to 40°C and relative humidity from 0% to 95%, without condensation.
South African users should pay particular attention to the upper temperature limit.
Equipment mounted in direct sunlight can become considerably hotter than the surrounding air.
Weather resistance should therefore not be interpreted as permission to ignore the manufacturer’s operating-temperature requirements.
The G100 still needs wired power
The Camera G100 is not a battery-powered security camera.
Aqara specifies a 5V/1A power input.
That creates both advantages and disadvantages.
A wired supply avoids routine battery charging and makes more sense for continuous recording.
However, installation becomes more complicated outdoors because power needs to reach the camera safely.
That should be considered before deciding where the camera will be mounted.
The best viewing angle is not necessarily the best installation position if power cannot be routed to it safely.
Two-way audio turns monitoring into communication
The G100 includes two-way audio.
Users can hear what is happening around the camera and communicate through it remotely.
At an entrance, this could allow someone inside the house to speak to a visitor.
Indoors, the same feature can provide communication between rooms.
Functionality can vary depending on the smart-home platform through which the camera is being accessed.
The compact body makes placement easier
The G100 measures approximately 58.16 × 58.16 × 72.25mm and weighs around 180g.
That makes it a particularly compact security camera.
Its mounting arrangement allows it to sit on a suitable surface or attach to a wall.
Aqara supplies mounting hardware with the camera.
The small footprint also makes the G100 less visually dominant when installed indoors.
For outdoor installations, useful coverage and appropriate protection from environmental conditions should remain more important than simply hiding the camera.
Storage choice changes the privacy equation
Modern security cameras increasingly require homeowners to consider more than image quality.
Where does the footage go?
Does recording depend on a subscription?
Can footage remain on the local network?
The G100 provides several possible answers.
MicroSD provides local recording. RTSP enables compatible local systems. Apple users can use HomeKit Secure Video. Aqara also provides its own cloud-based options.
This does not automatically make one method more private than another.
Instead, the important point is that the G100 provides choices rather than forcing all recording through one mandatory storage system.
South African power outages create another consideration
There is a particularly relevant limitation for South African installations.
The G100 has no internal battery.
If its power supply loses electricity, the camera stops operating unless that supply is connected to suitable backup power.
The network matters too.
Keeping the camera powered will not preserve remote connectivity if the router and fibre ONT also shut down.
Home security therefore needs to be considered as a complete system.
A suitable small UPS or backup-power solution for the camera and network equipment could maintain operation during an outage, provided all connected equipment is compatible with the backup system.

The G100 is more interesting for its flexibility than its resolution
The Aqara Camera G100 has most of the hardware expected from a modern compact security camera.
There is 2K recording, night vision, person detection, two-way audio and weather resistance.
Its broader appeal comes from how those capabilities can be used.
A homeowner can record to microSD rather than relying solely on cloud storage. Apple households can use HomeKit Secure Video. Google Home, Alexa and SmartThings are also supported, while RTSP gives enthusiasts another route into local surveillance and home-automation platforms.
There are compromises.
The camera requires wired power. Its Wi-Fi connection operates on 2.4GHz. HomeKit Secure Video is limited to 1080p despite the camera’s higher native resolution. Some of Aqara’s more advanced AI recognition capabilities rely on its cloud services.
None of those limitations changes the central proposition.
The G100 is a compact indoor and outdoor camera designed to give homeowners several choices about how their security system works.
For a modern smart-home camera, that flexibility may ultimately be more useful than simply adding more pixels.
