Aqara Curtain Driver E1 can automate the curtains you already own
Motorised curtains sound like the kind of feature that needs to be designed into a house from the beginning.
The Aqara Curtain Driver E1 takes a much simpler approach.
Instead of replacing the entire curtain rail with a powered track, the motor attaches to an existing compatible rod or rail and physically moves the curtain along it.
That makes the product especially interesting for renters, existing homes and anyone who wants smart curtains without rebuilding the window treatment.
Aqara offers the Curtain Driver E1 in Track and Rod versions, with slightly different mounting hardware for each installation type. Both use Zigbee 3.0 and require a compatible Aqara hub.
Aqara Curtain Driver E1 comes in two versions
Choosing the correct version is important.
The Track Version is intended for supported U-rails and I-rails.
Aqara specifies that U-rail bottom slots should be no wider than 8mm, while compatible I-rails require a bottom width of at least 10mm. Certain U-rail gliders without wheels are not supported.
The Rod Version can work with curtain rods as well as compatible U- and I-rails.
However, Aqara specifically excludes extendable curtain rods from supported installations.
That means buyers should inspect their existing curtain hardware before ordering rather than assuming every rail or rod will work.

Installation does not require replacing the curtain track
This is the E1’s biggest practical advantage.
Aqara says the Track Version can be mounted directly onto an existing compatible curtain rail without tools, after which setup is completed through the Aqara Home app.
The motor hangs behind the curtain and uses its driven wheel to move along the track.
That means the smart-home hardware remains mostly hidden during normal use.
For many households, this is far less disruptive than removing an existing curtain rail, installing a powered track and routing permanent mains power to the window.
It can move curtains weighing up to 12kg
Aqara rates the Curtain Driver E1 for a maximum curtain load of 12kg.
That is a substantial figure for a compact battery-powered motor.
However, curtain weight is only part of the story.
Track friction, bends, damaged gliders and poor alignment can increase the effort needed to move a curtain.
A lightweight curtain on a badly maintained rail may therefore be harder for a motor to move than a heavier curtain running smoothly.
The 12kg rating should be treated as the stated maximum rather than proof that every 12kg installation will work identically.
Two motors can control centre-opening curtains
Many windows use curtains that meet in the middle.
Aqara allows two Curtain Driver E1 units to be paired on one window, with each motor handling one side. The two can then be synchronised so both curtains open or close together.
This also reduces the amount of curtain each individual motor has to move.
The downside is obvious: a double-curtain installation requires two motors rather than one.
That should be factored into the overall smart-home design before buying.
The battery is rechargeable through USB-C
The E1 contains a rechargeable lithium battery and can be charged through USB-C.
Aqara claims battery life of up to one year, although it makes clear that real battery endurance varies according to curtain weight, track length and friction.
Aqara’s regional pages currently contain inconsistent battery-capacity figures, with some official pages stating 6000mAh and others 6400mAh. Because those official sources conflict, TechnologyBlog is not treating either capacity as definitive for every regional E1 version.
The useful practical fact is simpler: the battery is rechargeable and the manufacturer rates typical operation at up to approximately one year between charges under its defined test conditions.
It can also remain powered over USB-C
USB-C does not have to be used only for occasional charging.
Aqara says the Curtain Driver E1 can also operate while continuously powered through its USB-C connection.
That could make sense where a suitable power source is already available near the curtain.
However, Aqara warns that the cable needs to remain free enough that it cannot become tangled while the motor moves.
For most retrofit installations, battery operation will probably be cleaner because there is no visible cable running to the window.
A built-in light sensor can trigger curtain movement
The Aqara Curtain Driver E1 includes a light sensor.
That allows curtain behaviour to respond to ambient brightness rather than relying only on fixed schedules.
For example, curtains could partially close when direct sunlight becomes intense.
This has practical value beyond convenience.
Reducing strong afternoon sunlight can lower solar heat entering a room, potentially reducing the amount of cooling required.
Likewise, opening curtains when useful winter sunlight is available can help warm a room naturally.
The exact energy saving will depend heavily on the building, glazing, weather and HVAC system, so it should not be treated as a guaranteed reduction in electricity consumption.
Aqara sensors can make the automation more intelligent
The Curtain Driver becomes more useful when combined with other Aqara devices.
A temperature sensor could contribute to a rule that closes curtains when a room becomes too warm.
A motion or presence sensor could form part of a bedtime automation.
A door, switch or other Aqara trigger could also initiate curtain movement.
Aqara specifically supports automation based on brightness, temperature, motion, schedules and other events detected within its ecosystem.

The Aqara Home app supports schedules based on time, sunrise and sunset, as well as repeated schedules and other automation conditions.
That creates some practical routines.
Bedroom curtains could begin opening around sunrise.
Living-room curtains could close automatically after sunset for privacy.
West-facing curtains could close during particularly bright afternoon conditions.
These routines require far less manual intervention once they are configured.
A gentle manual pull can still control the curtain
Smart curtains should not become unusable when someone forgets they are smart.
Aqara supports a manual interaction where lightly pulling the curtain can trigger the Curtain Driver to continue moving it.
That makes the system feel more natural for visitors or other family members.
Instead of opening an app or remembering a voice command, the user can start moving the curtain in the way they normally would.
The motor then takes over.
Zigbee 3.0 means an Aqara hub is required
The Curtain Driver E1 uses Zigbee 3.0, not Wi-Fi.
That means it does not connect directly to a home router.
A compatible Aqara Zigbee hub is required.
For someone already invested in Aqara products, this is unlikely to be a major issue.
For a first-time Aqara buyer, however, the hub needs to be included in the total cost and setup.
There are advantages to Zigbee.
Low-power devices can communicate through a dedicated smart-home network rather than every device occupying a Wi-Fi connection.
Zigbee also suits battery-powered devices because it was designed around relatively low-power communication.
Aqara Hub M200 fits naturally into this setup

A compatible Aqara hub provides the bridge between Zigbee devices such as the Curtain Driver E1 and external smart-home platforms.
That can include Apple Home, Alexa, Google Home and other supported ecosystems depending on the hub and configuration.
For someone building a wider Aqara installation, the hub becomes the common point connecting sensors, switches, curtains and other devices.
Matter needs an important clarification
Aqara’s Curtain Driver E1 product page still contains old wording describing Matter as something that would be delivered through an OTA update to compatible Aqara hubs.
The E1 itself is not a native Matter-over-Thread curtain motor.
It remains a Zigbee 3.0 device.
Aqara’s current documentation shows that supported Zigbee window-covering devices can be exposed through compatible Matter-capable Aqara hubs as window-covering device types.
The practical distinction is important.
The Curtain Driver communicates with the Aqara hub over Zigbee.
The hub handles the Matter bridge into the wider ecosystem where supported.
Buyers should therefore verify that their particular hub, firmware and target Matter platform support the required curtain functionality before buying specifically for Matter integration.
Apple Home, Alexa and Google Home are supported
Aqara currently lists compatibility with Apple Home, Amazon Alexa, Google Home, SmartThings and Home Assistant for the Curtain Driver E1 ecosystem.
Voice control is one obvious benefit.
A command such as closing the bedroom curtains can become part of a normal bedtime routine.
However, voice control is probably less interesting than automation.
The real value comes when the curtain moves because the home already understands that it is sunset, the room is getting too hot or the household has started its nighttime routine.
The motor moves at up to 12cm per second
Aqara lists the Track Version’s moving speed at 12cm/s.
That means a curtain will not snap open instantly.
For a two-metre travel distance, the theoretical movement time at the rated speed is roughly 17 seconds before accounting for acceleration, configuration and actual installation conditions.
That slower motion suits curtains.
It is less abrupt, produces less visual distraction and places less stress on the rail than trying to move a heavy curtain at high speed.
Aqara’s European store also describes three adjustable motor speeds, allowing users to favour slower movement where desired.
The motor is rated at 7.5W input
Aqara lists a 5V input, 1.5A rated current and 7.5W rated power input for the Track Version.
Because the device normally runs on battery power, that figure is more relevant to charging and powered operation than to household mains consumption.
A 7.5W motor is a very different electrical load from high-power smart-home devices such as heaters or kettles.
Curtain automation is therefore unlikely to be meaningful in terms of its own electricity consumption.
Its potential energy value instead comes from how curtains can influence sunlight and room temperature.
The E1 is designed for indoor use
The US Aqara listing gives the device an IP20 rating and an operating temperature range of 0°C to 45°C.
IP20 means this is not a weatherproof outdoor motor.
It should therefore remain in a suitable indoor environment.
That is worth remembering for enclosed patios, outdoor entertainment spaces and windows where moisture can reach the curtain mechanism.
The product’s normal use case is an indoor curtain rail.
Smart curtains can improve privacy automatically
One of the least technical uses may also be one of the most useful.
Curtains can close automatically at sunset even when nobody remembers to do it.
That improves privacy without requiring someone to walk through the house every evening.
It can also help make a property appear occupied while the residents are away.
A schedule could open and close curtains at appropriate times rather than leaving them permanently shut for an entire holiday.
This should not be treated as a security system by itself, but it can become one small part of a wider occupancy automation.
It can also help manage glare
Large windows are valuable until afternoon sunlight falls directly onto a television, monitor or workspace.
The built-in light sensor allows the Aqara Curtain Driver E1 to respond to brightness conditions.
That could be particularly useful in home offices.
Rather than manually closing curtains every afternoon, an automation can respond when light exceeds a chosen threshold.
Users still need to configure the automation appropriately.
The motor does not independently understand which sunlight level is uncomfortable without being given rules through the smart-home system.
Curtain hardware compatibility is the biggest buying question
The technology itself is relatively straightforward.
The difficult part is often the curtain.
Before buying the E1, users should inspect:
- whether the installation uses a rod, U-rail or I-rail;
- the track dimensions;
- the glider type;
- whether the rod is extendable;
- the curtain weight;
- how smoothly the curtain currently moves;
- whether one or two motors are needed.
This matters more than whether a phone supports the Aqara app.
A technically compatible motor cannot overcome a curtain that jams halfway across a damaged track.
The Track Version dimensions are substantial but mostly hidden
Aqara lists the Track Version at approximately 145.7 × 96 × 46mm.
The Rod Version is listed at approximately 140.5 × 96 × 44mm on Aqara’s US store.
Those dimensions make the driver larger than a typical small smart-home sensor.
However, it hangs behind the curtain where it is largely concealed during normal use.
Its appearance therefore matters considerably less than something mounted visibly on a wall.
Aqara Curtain Driver E1 makes most sense inside a broader Aqara home
The Aqara Curtain Driver E1 can provide basic remote curtain control on its own with a suitable hub.
Its stronger use case appears when it becomes one component of a broader automation setup.
A presence sensor can determine whether someone is in the room.
A temperature sensor can identify a warm afternoon.
A smart switch can act as a physical curtain control.
The Curtain Driver then performs the mechanical movement.
That is the larger Aqara philosophy: individual smart-home devices become more useful when they exchange information through shared automations.
South African availability needs checking
Aqara maintains a global product presence, but TechnologyBlog could not verify a dedicated official South African Curtain Driver E1 product listing during this research.
That does not mean the product cannot be purchased locally through importers or smart-home specialists.
However, official South African stock, warranty handling and local pricing had not been confirmed from Aqara itself at the time of publication.
South African pricing is therefore deliberately omitted from this article.
Anyone importing the device should also make sure they receive the correct Rod or Track version, since the included mounting components differ.
Who should consider the Aqara Curtain Driver E1?
The Aqara Curtain Driver E1 makes sense for someone who already has curtains they like but wants to automate them.
It is particularly attractive where replacing the complete curtain rail would be expensive or disruptive.
Existing Aqara users gain the most because they already have the required hub and can combine the curtain motor with sensors, switches and broader automations.
Renters may also find the retrofit approach appealing where permanent alterations are undesirable, provided the existing track or rod is compatible.
The product makes less sense if the curtain hardware itself needs replacement.
In that situation, installing a purpose-built motorised curtain track may be worth considering instead.
Is the Aqara Curtain Driver E1 worth considering?
The Aqara Curtain Driver E1 solves a very specific smart-home problem neatly.
It adds motorised control without forcing the user to throw away an existing curtain rail.
Its built-in battery removes the need to run mains power to every window, while USB-C makes recharging straightforward.
A maximum quoted 12kg curtain load gives it enough capacity for many household installations, and the built-in light sensor creates useful automation possibilities around glare, privacy and temperature.
The main limitation is compatibility.
Curtain tracks, gliders and rods vary considerably, so buyers need to check the installation requirements carefully.
An Aqara Zigbee hub is also mandatory.
For someone already building an Aqara smart home, however, the Curtain Driver E1 can turn something as ordinary as opening a curtain into a useful part of a much wider automation system.
