The roots of IONOS go back to 1&1, founded in Germany in 1988 and later developed into a large web-hosting and internet-services business.

How IONOS Group developed

In 2018, 1&1 combined hosting, applications and server activities with cloud specialist ProfitBricks to form 1&1 IONOS. The brand became IONOS in 2020, and IONOS Group listed publicly in February 2023.

By 2026, IONOS provided web hosting, domains, cloud infrastructure, productivity and digital-presence services, with a strong customer base among small and medium-sized businesses in Europe.
