Commvault through the years: building backup and cyber-resilience

Commvault grew out of a development group associated with AT&T Bell Labs and became an independent incorporated company in 1996.

How Commvault developed

The company focused on enterprise backup, recovery and data management, later broadening into cloud data protection and cyber-resilience. It listed publicly in 2006 and continued adapting as customers moved workloads from physical servers into virtualised and cloud environments.

Commvault in 2026

By 2026, Commvault provided backup, recovery and data-protection software and services across on-premises, cloud and software-as-a-service environments.

Backup software became strategically more important as ransomware turned recovery from an operational IT task into a core security and business-continuity requirement.
