A plastics-group PCB division became an advanced substrate maker: Nan Ya PCB’s history

Nan Ya PCB began as a printed-circuit-board division of Nan Ya Plastics in 1985 and was established as a separate subsidiary in Taiwan in 1997.

The company produced printed circuit boards before moving into higher-density interconnection and semiconductor substrate technologies.

The important part of this history is the sequence. Each major step gave Nan Ya PCB another layer of capability, and later products or markets often depended on work that began years earlier.

Independent operations began in 1998

Nan Ya PCB started operating as a standalone company while retaining its connection to the Formosa Plastics Group.

The AI era increased the value of capabilities Nan Ya PCB had already been developing. Compute, data, networking, software or infrastructure that once served narrower workloads became relevant to much larger AI systems.

Flip-chip substrates moved the company closer to semiconductor packaging

The company began manufacturing flip-chip substrate products in 2001, entering a higher-precision market between the chip package and system board.

In semiconductor and electronics markets, this kind of capability compounds over time. Manufacturing know-how, yields, supplier relationships and process experience are difficult to recreate quickly, so each generation can strengthen the next.

The 2006 Taiwan listing financed capacity expansion

Nan Ya PCB listed on the Taiwan Stock Exchange as electronics supply chains continued moving towards denser and more complex packaging.

For Nan Ya PCB, access to public markets was more than a branding milestone. It increased financial transparency and created another route to fund expansion, acquisitions or long-term product development.

ABF substrates became critical to advanced processors

Modern CPUs, GPUs and AI accelerators rely on high-end substrates to route power and high-speed signals. Nan Ya PCB expanded production around these increasingly demanding products.

The AI era increased the value of capabilities Nan Ya PCB had already been developing. Compute, data, networking, software or infrastructure that once served narrower workloads became relevant to much larger AI systems.

The board business moved under the chip package

As of 18 September 2026, nan Ya PCB now manufactures conventional PCBs, HDI boards and advanced semiconductor substrates. Its evolution from a plastics-group division into a packaging supplier mirrors the increasing value of interconnect technology around high-performance chips.

For readers following the brand today, the history explains why newer announcements often connect back to technology or business decisions made much earlier.
