USDC turned a crypto start-up into stablecoin infrastructure: Circle’s history

Jeremy Allaire and Sean Neville founded Circle in 2013 as a digital-currency company focused on making blockchain-based money easier to use.

The company experimented with consumer payments and Bitcoin before shifting more heavily towards regulated infrastructure for digital dollars.

Circle Internet Group’s present-day business makes more sense when viewed through those early choices. The company repeatedly reused existing expertise rather than reinventing itself from nothing.

Consumer Bitcoin products gave way to infrastructure

Circle initially offered wallet and payment products but moved away from direct retail exchange as the crypto market matured.

The AI era increased the value of capabilities Circle Internet Group had already been developing. Compute, data, networking, software or infrastructure that once served narrower workloads became relevant to much larger AI systems.

USDC created the company’s defining network

Circle and Coinbase launched USD Coin in 2018 as a dollar-backed stablecoin designed to move value across blockchain networks while maintaining a one-dollar reference value.

The CENTRE arrangement evolved as Circle took greater control

Circle increasingly assumed direct responsibility for USDC issuance, reserves and compliance as the stablecoin grew into a major part of crypto-market infrastructure.

This was an important turning point because it expanded what Circle Internet Group could offer or the markets it could address. The effect becomes clearer when viewed as part of the longer sequence of changes that followed.

The public listing opened stablecoins to equity investors

Circle became a publicly traded company in 2025, giving investors direct exposure to a business whose economics depend heavily on stablecoin circulation and reserve income.

For Circle Internet Group, access to public markets was more than a branding milestone. It increased financial transparency and created another route to fund expansion, acquisitions or long-term product development.

The wallet disappeared, but the digital dollar remained

As of 18 September 2026, circle is now primarily a stablecoin and digital-financial-infrastructure company. Its history illustrates how crypto businesses can migrate from speculative assets towards payment and settlement systems tied to conventional currencies.

For readers following the brand today, the history explains why newer announcements often connect back to technology or business decisions made much earlier.
