Alison Sealy-Smith brings the voice of Storm to Comic Con Africa 2026

The voice behind one of the X-Men’s most recognisable characters is heading to Johannesburg, with Alison Sealy-Smith confirmed for Comic Con Africa 2026.

The Barbadian-Canadian actor is best known to Marvel audiences as Ororo Munroe, better known as Storm, a role she first performed in X-Men: The Animated Series and later returned to in X-Men ’97.

Comic Con Africa takes place at the Johannesburg Expo Centre in Nasrec from 24 to 27 September 2026, giving South African animation and Marvel fans an opportunity to see a performer whose connection with the X-Men stretches back more than three decades.

Sealy-Smith is expected to take part in convention panel discussions as well as separate autograph and professional photo opportunities.

Alison Sealy-Smith helped define Storm for a generation

Storm has existed in Marvel Comics since the 1970s, but X-Men: The Animated Series introduced the character to a much broader television audience during the 1990s.

Sealy-Smith provided Storm’s voice throughout the animated series, helping establish the commanding and deliberate performance that became closely associated with the character.

Storm is considerably more than a supporting member of the X-Men.

The character is a mutant capable of manipulating weather and has repeatedly served as one of the team’s leaders. Her history has also taken her beyond the X-Men, including major storylines involving Wakanda and Black Panther.

For television audiences who grew up with the animated series, Sealy-Smith’s performance became an important part of that identity.

That made her eventual return particularly significant.

X-Men ’97 brought Alison Sealy-Smith back as Storm

Marvel Animation revived the world of the original programme with X-Men ’97, continuing the story of the animated X-Men rather than simply starting another unrelated adaptation.

Sealy-Smith returned to perform Storm.

That creates an unusual connection between two generations of Marvel animation.

Viewers who first encountered Storm in the 1990s can hear the same performer in the modern continuation, while younger viewers discovering the characters through X-Men ’97 are hearing a voice performance with decades of history behind it.

It also means Sealy-Smith arrives at Comic Con Africa while Storm is once again highly visible in contemporary animation.

Storm is not Sealy-Smith’s only Marvel role

Storm may dominate Sealy-Smith’s comic-book résumé, but she has performed other characters as well.

Her voice credits include Gamora in the animated Silver Surfer series, giving her another connection to the wider Marvel universe.

Her work also extends outside Marvel.

Sealy-Smith has voiced Scarlet in Delilah and Julius and has credits connected to productions including Spider-Man and Sailor Moon.

That wider career is worth noting because voice actors often become heavily associated with a single character despite working across many productions.

In Sealy-Smith’s case, however, Storm has remained the defining role.

South African fans can meet Alison Sealy-Smith at Comic Con Africa

Comic Con Africa says Sealy-Smith will participate in discussions where fans can hear about her career and creative work.

The convention will also offer autograph sessions and professional photo opportunities.

Those paid celebrity experiences operate separately from normal Comic Con Africa admission. Visitors planning to book an autograph or photograph therefore need a valid convention ticket as well as the relevant celebrity experience.

Availability for celebrity sessions can change as allocations sell out.

Fans travelling specifically to meet Sealy-Smith should check their selected session and convention day carefully before heading to Nasrec.

Why Storm remains one of the X-Men’s most important characters

The X-Men franchise has produced dozens of prominent characters, but Storm occupies a particularly significant position.

Created by Len Wein and Dave Cockrum, Ororo Munroe made her comic-book debut in 1975 and became one of Marvel’s most prominent Black superheroes.

Her importance is not based solely on her powers.

Storm has repeatedly led the X-Men and has developed from a powerful team member into one of the central figures in the wider X-Men mythology.

Animation helped take that character beyond comic-book readers.

The success of X-Men: The Animated Series exposed an international television audience to characters and storylines that had previously been much more closely associated with comic books.

Sealy-Smith’s performance was part of that transition.

X-Men ’97 introduced Storm to another generation

The arrival of X-Men ’97 created an interesting challenge.

The new production needed to retain enough of the original programme’s identity to feel like a genuine continuation while operating in a completely different television and streaming environment.

Returning performers helped create that continuity.

For Storm, that meant Sealy-Smith once again performing the character rather than replacing the original voice entirely.

The result gives Comic Con Africa attendees an opportunity to hear from an actor who has experienced both eras of the production.

That makes potential discussions around voice acting, returning to a character after many years and the evolution of animation particularly interesting for fans.

Comic Con Africa’s animation line-up extends beyond X-Men

Sealy-Smith joins an unusually broad voice-acting line-up at Comic Con Africa 2026.

Rick and Morty is represented by Ian Cardoni, Harry Belden and Spencer Grammer, the performers behind Rick, Morty and Summer.

The convention is also bringing guests from gaming, television and comics to Johannesburg.

Christopher Judge represents one of the biggest gaming connections through his performance as Kratos in the modern God of War series, while comic creators and Artist Alley exhibitors broaden the programme beyond screen performers.

This mix helps distinguish Comic Con Africa from a straightforward celebrity convention.

The event combines animation and television guests with comics, gaming, esports, cosplay, anime, Artist Alley, tabletop gaming and exhibitors across the four-day programme.

Comic Con Africa 2026 opens on Heritage Day

Comic Con Africa 2026 begins on Thursday, 24 September, which is Heritage Day in South Africa, and continues until Sunday, 27 September.

The Johannesburg Expo Centre will host the convention from 09:00 to 18:00 daily.

For Sealy-Smith’s fans, her appearance provides something South African audiences rarely receive locally: direct access to one of the performers behind an internationally recognised animated superhero.

More than 30 years after X-Men: The Animated Series first introduced audiences to her version of Storm, Alison Sealy-Smith is bringing that voice to Johannesburg.
