The history of Teradata: origins, milestones and its 2026 business

Teradata was formed in 1979 in California to build a specialised database computer capable of analysing very large data sets through parallel processing.

How Teradata developed

Its systems were adopted by large enterprises, and NCR acquired Teradata in 1991. After NCR itself passed through AT&T ownership and later independence, Teradata was spun out as a separate publicly traded company in 2007.

Teradata in 2026

By 2026, Teradata provided enterprise analytics and data-platform software for cloud and hybrid environments, extending far beyond its original purpose-built hardware.

Why the history matters

Teradata helped establish the enterprise data-warehouse category and shows how a hardware-intensive architecture can evolve into software and cloud services while retaining a focus on large-scale analytical workloads.
