A cancer diagnosis led Eric Lefkofsky to build Tempus: the history of a health-data AI company

Eric Lefkofsky founded Tempus in August 2015 after his wife was diagnosed with breast cancer and he encountered how difficult it was to connect clinical and molecular data during treatment.

He recruited Ryan Fukushima as the first employee and began building a platform intended to make healthcare data more useful for personalised treatment decisions.

What followed was not a straight expansion into every adjacent market. Tempus AI moved through specific technical and commercial turning points that gradually changed what customers expected from it.

Oncology was the first place data and genomics came together

Tempus began by combining genomic testing with clinical information so oncologists could compare an individual patient’s disease with larger datasets.

This was an important turning point because it expanded what Tempus AI could offer or the markets it could address. The effect becomes clearer when viewed as part of the longer sequence of changes that followed.

The model expanded beyond cancer

Tempus extended its data and diagnostic capabilities into areas including cardiology, neuropsychiatry, infectious disease and radiology.

Mobile technology rewarded companies that could scale rapidly while adapting to new standards and device requirements. For Tempus AI, the milestone widened the role it could play as connectivity became a default feature of everyday computing.

A large clinical-data network became a second business

The company built datasets and software used by pharmaceutical and biotechnology customers for research, trial design and drug development.

Infrastructure businesses are judged by reliability, scale and the cost of moving information. This milestone increased the company’s relevance as digital services became more distributed and more dependent on high-capacity connections.

The 2024 Nasdaq IPO made precision medicine a public AI story

Tempus AI became publicly traded under the ticker TEM, giving investors direct exposure to its diagnostics, data and AI strategy.

For Tempus AI, access to public markets was more than a branding milestone. It increased financial transparency and created another route to fund expansion, acquisitions or long-term product development.

Why the company started with one family’s unanswered questions

As of 18 September 2026, tempus now combines diagnostics, multimodal clinical data and AI software across patient care and life-sciences research.

Seen chronologically, the company is less a collection of unrelated products than a chain of decisions in which one capability created the conditions for the next.
