How Siltronic evolved into its modern technology business

Siltronic’s roots go back to Wacker’s work on high-purity silicon in the 1950s. Wacker-Chemitronic was established in 1968 to develop and manufacture semiconductor-grade silicon materials.

How Siltronic developed

The business adopted the Siltronic name in 2004 and became an independently listed company in 2015. It continued investing in larger-diameter and higher-purity wafers, including a new 300 mm facility in Singapore inaugurated in 2024.

Siltronic in 2026

By 2026, Siltronic was one of the major global manufacturers of hyperpure silicon wafers used by semiconductor fabs as the substrate for integrated circuits.

Why the history matters

Its history underlines how semiconductor scaling depends not only on lithography and chip design but on exceptional control of crystal quality, surface flatness and contamination in the starting wafer.
