Norton: From PC Utilities to a Gen Digital Cybersecurity Brand
The Norton name in software dates to Peter Norton Computing, founded in 1982 and known for utility software for personal computers.
Norton Utilities became the defining early product family, giving PC users tools to recover files, inspect disks and maintain systems at a time when operating systems offered far fewer built-in diagnostics.
PC utilities become consumer cybersecurity
Symantec acquired Peter Norton Computing in 1990 and turned Norton into a major security brand. The corporate structure changed again when Symantec’s consumer business became NortonLifeLock and then combined with Avast to form Gen Digital in 2022.
Norton now operates at the consumer-cybersecurity layer: malware protection, identity services, privacy tools and scam detection rather than low-level disk utilities.
Norton today
In 2026 Norton is an active Gen Digital brand, with products and research focused increasingly on identity, scams and AI-assisted online threats.
The brand’s evolution mirrors the changing risk model of personal computing. The problem moved from recovering a damaged disk to protecting a person across accounts, devices, payments and increasingly AI-mediated communications.
