Nikon: How Optical Engineering Grew Beyond the Camera
Nikon began in 1917 as Nippon Kogaku K.K., created by combining Japanese optical businesses to build advanced optical instruments domestically.
Among its early self-developed products were MIKRON binoculars. The company spent its first decades building expertise in optical glass, microscopes, measuring equipment and precision instruments.
The Nikon Model I turns optics into a camera brand
The Nikon Model I, released in 1948, was the first camera to carry the Nikon name and became the start of a camera line that built the brand globally. Nikon later applied precision optics to semiconductor lithography and industrial measurement as well.
Nikon’s durable capability is control of light: lens design, optical glass, precision mechanics, imaging sensors and lithography systems all depend on manipulating or measuring light accurately.
Nikon today
The company now organizes its growth around imaging products, precision equipment, healthcare, components and digital manufacturing rather than cameras alone.
Cameras made Nikon famous, but the company’s optical expertise also moved into microscopes, semiconductor lithography and industrial measurement. Control of light—not one product category—is the durable thread.
