Plastic wafer carriers became semiconductor materials infrastructure: the Entegris story

Entegris traces its roots to Fluoroware, founded in 1966 to make specialised fluid- and wafer-handling products for the emerging semiconductor industry.

The company developed contamination-control products designed to keep chemicals, wafers and production environments extremely clean.

What followed was not a straight expansion into every adjacent market. Entegris moved through specific technical and commercial turning points that gradually changed what customers expected from it.

Fluoropolymers created the first materials-handling niche

Early semiconductor manufacturing required containers and fluid systems that would not introduce particles or unwanted chemical contamination.

The AI era increased the value of capabilities Entegris had already been developing. Compute, data, networking, software or infrastructure that once served narrower workloads became relevant to much larger AI systems.

The 1999 Fluoroware-EMPAK merger created Entegris

Fluoroware combined with wafer-handling company EMPAK and adopted the Entegris name, broadening process knowledge and product scope.

The transaction mattered because it changed the shape of Entegris rather than simply adding revenue. It brought additional technology, customers, geographic reach or operating capability into the group and influenced the next stage of its strategy.

Mykrolis strengthened filtration and purification

Entegris merged with Mykrolis in 2005, adding gas and liquid purification technologies critical to high-purity semiconductor processes.

In semiconductor and electronics markets, this kind of capability compounds over time. Manufacturing know-how, yields, supplier relationships and process experience are difficult to recreate quickly, so each generation can strengthen the next.

CMC Materials moved Entegris into CMP consumables

The 2022 acquisition of CMC Materials added chemical-mechanical planarisation slurries and pads, significantly expanding Entegris’ materials role inside advanced fabs.

Cleanliness became a semiconductor technology

As of 18 September 2026, entegris now supplies specialty materials, filtration, contamination control and process consumables across semiconductor manufacturing. As chip dimensions shrink, the cost of microscopic contamination rises, making seemingly mundane purity technology strategically important.

Seen chronologically, the company is less a collection of unrelated products than a chain of decisions in which one capability created the conditions for the next.
