Four Acer engineers built a motherboard company — ASUS grew into a global PC brand

ASUS was founded in Taipei in 1989 by T.H. Tung, Ted Hsu, Wayne Hsieh and M.T. Liao, engineers who had previously worked at Acer.

The company first specialised in motherboards, a technically demanding PC component whose quality could establish credibility with system builders.

The important part of this history is the sequence. Each major step gave ASUS another layer of capability, and later products or markets often depended on work that began years earlier.

Motherboard design created the engineering reputation

ASUS became one of the world’s largest motherboard suppliers during the expansion of the IBM-compatible PC market.

This was an important turning point because it expanded what ASUS could offer or the markets it could address. The effect becomes clearer when viewed as part of the longer sequence of changes that followed.

Notebooks moved the brand from component to complete system

The company expanded into laptops, graphics cards and other devices, building a consumer-facing brand around hardware that had previously sat inside other PCs.

This was an important turning point because it expanded what ASUS could offer or the markets it could address. The effect becomes clearer when viewed as part of the longer sequence of changes that followed.

Eee PC helped ignite the netbook boom

ASUS launched the Eee PC in 2007, helping popularise low-cost compact notebooks before tablets and ultrabooks reshaped the category.

This was an important turning point because it expanded what ASUS could offer or the markets it could address. The effect becomes clearer when viewed as part of the longer sequence of changes that followed.

ROG turned enthusiast hardware into a lifestyle brand

Republic of Gamers expanded across motherboards, graphics cards, laptops, monitors and peripherals, giving ASUS a strong identity in premium gaming hardware.

Cybersecurity markets change as applications, users and infrastructure move. The significance of this step was therefore not only the product itself, but the way it allowed the company to follow customers into a broader threat environment.

The motherboard supplier became the logo on the laptop lid

As of 18 September 2026, aSUS now spans PCs, components, gaming hardware, phones and networking. The founding motherboard business still matters because engineering credibility at component level became the foundation for the complete systems sold under the ASUS and ROG brands.

The distance between “Motherboard design created the engineering reputation” and “ROG turned enthusiast hardware into a lifestyle brand” captures the larger story: ASUS kept extending the value of its original expertise into new products, markets or infrastructure.
