Jay Chaudhry bet the corporate network would disappear: how Zscaler built security in the cloud

Jay Chaudhry founded Zscaler in 2007 after building and selling several earlier cybersecurity companies.

He argued that security appliances placed inside corporate networks would become less effective as employees, applications and data moved directly to the internet and cloud.

The important part of this history is the sequence. Each major step gave Zscaler another layer of capability, and later products or markets often depended on work that began years earlier.

A global proxy network replaced the branch-office security stack

Zscaler routed user traffic through distributed cloud security services rather than requiring every office to maintain separate web-security appliances.

This shift also changed how customers consumed the technology. Instead of treating software or infrastructure as a one-off purchase, the relationship became more continuous, with updates, capacity and services delivered over time.

Zero Trust Exchange reframed access around identity rather than network location

The company expanded from secure web gateways into private-application access, using identity and policy to connect users directly to applications without placing them broadly on a corporate network.

Cybersecurity markets change as applications, users and infrastructure move. The significance of this step was therefore not only the product itself, but the way it allowed the company to follow customers into a broader threat environment.

The 2018 IPO arrived as cloud adoption accelerated

Zscaler listed on Nasdaq in 2018 while enterprises were moving more applications to SaaS and public cloud infrastructure.

For Zscaler, access to public markets was more than a branding milestone. It increased financial transparency and created another route to fund expansion, acquisitions or long-term product development.

Data protection and AI widened the security platform

Zscaler added cloud workload, data-loss-prevention, digital-experience and AI-assisted security products while preserving the same distributed-cloud architecture.

This shift also changed how customers consumed the technology. Instead of treating software or infrastructure as a one-off purchase, the relationship became more continuous, with updates, capacity and services delivered over time.

The disappearing perimeter became the business model

As of 18 September 2026, zscaler is now one of the most prominent vendors associated with zero-trust and security-service-edge architectures. The founding thesis — that the traditional corporate perimeter would erode — became more accurate as remote work and SaaS adoption expanded.

The company’s current position is therefore the result of accumulated technical and commercial choices rather than one breakthrough product. That is the context future coverage should preserve.
