Oil exploration, the silicon transistor and the integrated circuit: the surprising history of Texas Instruments

Texas Instruments did not begin as an electronics company. Its roots lie in oil exploration.

Geophysical Service Inc. opened in 1930, using seismic technology to help locate underground resources. Work during the Second World War expanded the organisation’s expertise in signal processing and electronics.

Those capabilities eventually produced one of the companies most closely associated with the semiconductor revolution.

Geophysical signals led towards electronic systems

GSI developed equipment for processing signals generated during exploration.

During the 1940s, it applied similar knowledge to technologies including submarine detection and radar.

Texas Instruments emerged in 1951

The electronics business was reorganised under the Texas Instruments name in the early 1950s.
