Tenable through the years: from its origins to 2026

Tenable was founded in 2002 by Ron Gula, Jack Huffard and Renaud Deraison. Deraison had created the Nessus vulnerability scanner before the company was formed, giving Tenable an established technical foundation in vulnerability assessment.

How Tenable developed

The business expanded from vulnerability scanning into broader security analytics and exposure management as enterprise infrastructure spread across data centres, cloud services, operational technology and internet-facing assets. Tenable became publicly traded in 2018.

Tenable in 2026

By 2026, Tenable provided an exposure-management platform designed to identify and prioritise security weaknesses across complex organisational attack surfaces.

Why the history matters

Its history tracks an important cybersecurity shift: finding individual software vulnerabilities is no longer enough when organisations need to understand which combinations of assets, identities and weaknesses create the greatest practical risk.
