Riot Platforms through the years: building Bitcoin mining and digital infrastructure

The company now known as Riot Platforms was incorporated in Colorado in 2000 as AspenBio and spent years in businesses unrelated to cryptocurrency.

How Riot Platforms developed

After several name and strategy changes, it became Riot Blockchain in October 2017 as management shifted toward digital assets. The company later acquired large-scale Bitcoin-mining and data-centre assets, including Whinstone US, and adopted the Riot Platforms name at the end of 2022.

Riot Platforms in 2026

By 2026, Riot operated large Bitcoin-mining infrastructure and was developing power-rich data-centre capacity rather than presenting itself only as a cryptocurrency holding company.

Riot’s path is a reminder that corporate history can be discontinuous: the listed entity predates Bitcoin, while the business investors recognise today largely took shape after the 2017 pivot.

Information was checked against public company material, regulatory filings and reputable independent reporting where available, using sources accessible on 18 September 2026.
