QNAP: How NAS Evolved from File Storage into an Edge Platform

QNAP was founded in Taiwan in 2004 with network-attached storage as its core business.

Its own corporate timeline identifies the TS-101, launched in 2006, as its first NAS product.

NAS grows into networking and enterprise storage

QNAP pushed NAS beyond simple file sharing by adding applications, virtualization, faster Ethernet and later ZFS-based systems. In 2018 it also entered network switching with the QSW-1208-8C.

The company operates where storage meets networking and software. RAID, filesystems, virtualization, containers, backup, security and network throughput all influence how useful a NAS becomes once it is more than a disk enclosure.

QNAP today

QNAP now sells NAS, storage, networking and management products to home, creative, SMB and enterprise users.

The company’s history tracks the NAS category itself: from shared storage appliance to multipurpose edge server. Its challenge has increasingly been balancing flexibility with the security demands of always-connected storage.
