From early roots to Russian e-commerce and marketplace logistics: the Ozon story

Ozon began operating in Russia in 1998 as an online bookstore, making it one of the country’s earliest large internet-commerce businesses.

How Ozon developed

It broadened into a general online marketplace and built logistics, fulfilment and financial-services capabilities around e-commerce. Ozon listed American depositary shares on Nasdaq in 2020, but the listing was later lost after trading disruptions and the geopolitical consequences of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

By 2026, Ozon remained a major Russian e-commerce platform, with marketplace retail, logistics and related financial services forming the core of the business.

Its history shows both the scale that local e-commerce platforms can reach and the way sanctions, market access and geopolitical risk can reshape the capital-market options available to technology companies.

Information was checked against public company material, regulatory filings and reputable independent reporting where available, using sources accessible on 18 September 2026.
