Two Salesforce veterans made identity the new perimeter: how Okta built a cloud login platform
Todd McKinnon and Frederic Kerrest founded Okta in 2009 after working at Salesforce and recognising that companies were adopting more cloud applications than traditional identity systems could manage easily.
The company created a cloud service for single sign-on and user management across many software providers.
The early business looks very different from the company visible today. Following the milestones in order shows which decisions changed Okta’s direction and which capabilities remained constant.
Application integrations turned identity into a network
Okta built thousands of pre-integrated connections so IT teams could manage employee access without custom work for every SaaS product.
This shift also changed how customers consumed the technology. Instead of treating software or infrastructure as a one-off purchase, the relationship became more continuous, with updates, capacity and services delivered over time.
The 2017 IPO validated identity-as-a-service
Okta went public as cloud applications, mobile work and remote access made identity increasingly central to enterprise security.
For Okta, access to public markets was more than a branding milestone. It increased financial transparency and created another route to fund expansion, acquisitions or long-term product development.
Auth0 expanded from workforce identity into developer identity
Okta acquired Auth0 in 2021, adding a developer-focused platform for building customer authentication into applications.
The transaction mattered because it changed the shape of Okta rather than simply adding revenue. It brought additional technology, customers, geographic reach or operating capability into the group and influenced the next stage of its strategy.
Security incidents forced greater emphasis on privileged access and resilience
High-profile breaches and support-system incidents increased scrutiny of the company because identity providers themselves are attractive targets. Okta responded with additional security investment and product hardening.
Cybersecurity markets change as applications, users and infrastructure move. The significance of this step was therefore not only the product itself, but the way it allowed the company to follow customers into a broader threat environment.
The login became the security boundary
As of 18 September 2026, okta now spans workforce and customer identity. Its history reflects a broader security transition: when applications live everywhere, verifying who a user is becomes more useful than assuming everyone inside a corporate network is trusted.
Seen chronologically, the company is less a collection of unrelated products than a chain of decisions in which one capability created the conditions for the next.
