Monotaro: the history behind B2B industrial e-commerce
MonotaRO was established in Japan in October 2000 by Sumitomo Corporation and US industrial distributor W.W. Grainger to sell maintenance, repair and operations supplies online.
How Monotaro developed
The business built a catalogue-based e-commerce model for small and medium-sized organisations, changed its name to MonotaRO in 2006 and listed on the Tokyo Stock Exchange’s Mothers market the same year. It began applying machine-learning techniques to merchandising and recommendations as early as 2008.
Monotaro in 2026
By 2026, MonotaRO operated a large business-to-business e-commerce platform for tools, parts, consumables and industrial supplies.
Its history shows that e-commerce can be especially powerful in fragmented industrial purchasing, where buyers value search, availability and procurement efficiency more than consumer-style branding.
Information was checked against public company material, regulatory filings and reputable independent reporting where available, using sources accessible on 18 September 2026.
