Insta360 X6 pushes 360 capture to 8K50 with 120MP photos and replaceable lenses
The Insta360 X6 has launched globally as the company’s new flagship 360-degree camera, bringing 8K recording at up to 50 frames per second, 120MP 360 photos and a new dual-sensor imaging system.
Insta360 released the X6 on 12 August 2026 in Midnight Black and Arctic White. The camera uses two 1/1.1-inch sensors with f/2.0 lenses and introduces 10-bit video, Dolby Vision and I-Log to the X Series.
The X6 also moves further beyond conventional 360 recording. InstaFrame 2.0 can produce a standard flat video while preserving 360 footage for later reframing. Single-lens mode reaches 5K60, while new AI editing tools aim to reduce the amount of manual post-production creators need to complete.
TechnologyBlog.co.za has not tested the Insta360 X6. This article therefore focuses on its verified specifications and features rather than making conclusions about image quality, stabilisation, thermal performance or real-world battery endurance.
8K 360 video now reaches 50fps
The headline upgrade is 8K 360-degree recording at up to 50fps.
The X6 records 7680 × 3840 video at 50, 48, 30, 25 or 24fps. Creators can also select 6K at up to 60fps or 4K at up to 100fps.
Higher frame rates provide more flexibility for movement-heavy footage. Cycling, motorsport and action sequences can benefit from smoother motion than conventional 8K30 capture.
However, the resolution describes the entire 360-degree image rather than a conventional rectangular 8K frame. Once a creator reframes one section of the sphere into a normal video, the exported view uses only part of the original captured resolution.
That distinction matters when evaluating any 360 camera.
Two 1/1.1-inch sensors handle imaging
Insta360 equips the X6 with dual 1/1.1-inch sensors and f/2.0 lenses. Each lens provides a 7.78mm equivalent focal length.
The larger sensor system gives Insta360 more image information to work with for high-resolution recording and difficult lighting conditions.
The camera supports an ISO range from 100 to 6400. Video shutter speeds run from 1/8000 second down to the limit imposed by the selected frame rate.
Sensor dimensions alone do not establish low-light quality. Lens characteristics, processing and noise reduction also affect the finished image.
TechnologyBlog.co.za has not independently compared X6 footage under controlled lighting conditions.
PureVideo extends to 8K
The X6 includes PureVideo for lower-light recording.
In 360 mode, PureVideo supports 8K at up to 30fps, 6K at up to 30fps and 4K at up to 30fps. Flat PureVideo can reach 4K60 in supported aspect ratios.
Insta360 uses its AI processing system to reduce noise and improve image information in darker scenes.
That processing could prove useful for night-time travel, indoor events and action footage after sunset.
Creators should still treat low-light marketing carefully. TechnologyBlog.co.za has not tested how much fine detail PureVideo retains or how it handles rapidly moving subjects at night.
X6 becomes the first X Series camera with 10-bit video
The X6 records video with 10-bit colour depth, while earlier X Series models listed in Insta360’s current technical documentation use 8-bit video.
More bit depth gives video files additional tonal information. This can help reduce visible banding in gradients such as skies and provide more flexibility during colour grading.
Insta360 also provides I-Log for creators who want greater control during post-production.
Dolby Vision provides another route. The X6 can record Dolby Vision directly in-camera across 360 Video and PureVideo without a resolution or frame-rate restriction in those 360 modes.
Flat-mode Dolby Vision support depends on the selected recording specification.
The X6 uses H.265 video encoding and supports bitrates up to 360Mbps.
Those higher data rates increase storage demands, particularly when recording 8K footage for extended periods.
120MP photos capture the full 360-degree scene
Still photography reaches 120MP in 360 mode, producing images at up to 15520 × 7760 pixels. A lower 30MP 360 option is also available.
When using one lens as a conventional camera, the X6 can capture photographs at up to 42MP.
Supported photo formats include INSP, JPG and DNG.
High-resolution 360 photography can benefit users who want to choose their composition after taking the shot. Instead of deciding exactly where the camera should point, the user captures the surrounding scene and reframes it later.
The trade-off is file size and workflow. High-resolution 360 files demand more storage and processing than an ordinary smartphone photograph.
Single-lens mode turns the X6 into a conventional action camera
The X6 does not require users to shoot everything in 360 degrees.
Single-Lens Mode can record conventional flat video at up to 5K60 in supported 4:3 and 16:9 formats. It can also reach 4K120 for higher-frame-rate recording.
This gives users another reason to carry one camera instead of a separate 360 and traditional action camera.
FreeFrame Video offers further flexibility. The X6 can record a 6016 × 6016 file at up to 30fps, allowing users to choose between 16:9, 9:16, 4:3, 3:4 and square compositions afterwards.
That can help creators who need different versions of the same footage for YouTube, Instagram, TikTok and other platforms.
One recording session can therefore provide material for both horizontal and vertical publishing.
InstaFrame 2.0 reduces the need to reframe everything manually
One of the practical challenges with 360 cameras comes after recording.
Capturing every direction provides considerable freedom, but somebody still needs to decide where the viewer should look in the finished video.
InstaFrame 2.0 attempts to simplify that workflow. It can record a standard flat video with built-in camera movement and smart tracking while optionally retaining the original 360 footage.
The flat output supports 4K, including 16:9, 9:16 and cinematic 2.35:1 formats at up to 60fps in supported configurations. A 360 backup can also record at up to 8K30.
Smart Tracking can follow people and objects during recording.
This gives creators two options. Someone who wants a fast publishing workflow can use the automatically framed file. A user who later decides that the framing was wrong can return to the 360 recording and create another version.
AI Director attempts to edit footage automatically
Insta360 is also expanding automation after capture.
The company has introduced PanoMind, its own multimodal AI model designed specifically around 360-degree content. It powers functions including AI Director and other automated editing tools.
AI Director can identify potential highlights while the camera charges and send an edited result to the connected phone. Auto Edit 2.0 provides another automated workflow from selected footage.
Moments Pro extends the idea into Insta360’s cloud services by allowing users to describe the editing style they want.
These tools address a real problem with 360 footage. Capturing everything is easy; deciding what to show can require considerably more work.
Automated editing does not guarantee that the software will choose the same moments or framing as a human editor. Creators producing commercial work should still review the finished video before publishing it.
Spatial Capture can turn 360 footage into a 3D scene
The X6 also introduces a more experimental feature called Spatial Capture.
Insta360 uses 3D Gaussian Splatting technology to reconstruct a recorded space into a three-dimensional scene. Users can then explore the captured environment from viewpoints beyond the original camera position.
This moves the camera beyond conventional video playback.
Potential uses could include travel memories, property documentation and other situations where preserving the layout of a space matters as much as recording a conventional clip.
The technology also introduces additional processing requirements. Users should check how Insta360 handles uploaded data and cloud processing before using spatial reconstruction with sensitive locations or private material.
Replaceable Lens 2.0 addresses one of the risks of 360 cameras
A 360 camera places its lenses in an exposed position so they can capture as much of the surrounding scene as possible.
That makes scratches particularly concerning.
The X6 supports user-replaceable outer lens elements. Insta360 sells an official repair kit that allows a damaged or scratched lens element to be removed without replacing the entire camera.
Users need to complete a stitching calibration after replacement.
Insta360 advises against self-repair when the damage extends beyond the replaceable element. A cracked lens assembly, damaged retaining ring or badly damaged camera should go through official repair channels.
The company also offers Standard and Premium Lens Guards for additional protection.
The camera automatically detects compatible lens guards
The X6 can detect when supported Insta360 lens guards are installed.
The camera then changes its lens-guard mode automatically rather than requiring the user to select the appropriate stitching profile manually.
This matters because placing another optical element in front of a 360 lens can affect stitching.
Both Standard and Premium Lens Guards are removable. Insta360 recommends keeping protection fitted during normal use when the shooting scenario allows it.
The guards are not intended for use with the X6 Invisible Dive Case Pro.
Users planning underwater recording therefore need to choose the appropriate protection setup for the environment.
Waterproofing reaches 20 metres without a case
The X6 carries an IPX8 water-resistance rating and can operate at depths of up to 20 metres without a dive case under Insta360’s specified conditions.
Adding the compatible Dive Case increases the supported depth to 60 metres.
The camera also carries an IP6X dust-resistance rating. Insta360 describes the X6 as dust-tight under the applicable test conditions.
Users should still inspect the battery and USB seals before entering water.
Insta360 also recommends a dive case for the best underwater image and stitching quality because water changes how light passes through the lenses.
After salt-water exposure, users should rinse and dry the camera according to Insta360’s maintenance instructions.
A 2,600mAh battery targets longer recording sessions
The standard X6 includes a 2,600mAh Xtreme Battery. Insta360 also lists a smaller 1,300mAh Lite Battery option.
Battery life varies significantly with the selected recording mode.
Insta360 rates 8K30 recording for around 140 minutes under its laboratory conditions. Recording at 8K50 reduces that figure to about 79 minutes.
6K30 reaches approximately 170 minutes, while Endurance Mode can extend 6K24 recording to around 200 minutes.
These are controlled measurements rather than TechnologyBlog.co.za test results.
Ambient temperature, screen use, Wi-Fi and recording settings can all affect actual endurance.
Endurance Mode trades features for longer recording
Endurance Mode reduces power use when creators need longer continuous recording.
On the X6, it supports 360 Photo, 360 Video, Loop Recording and Road Mode. Maximum supported recording in this mode includes 8K30, 6K30 and 4K30.
The system limits selected features to reduce consumption.
That could make it useful for long cycling routes, road trips and other recordings where duration matters more than using every camera function.
Creators should decide which matters more before starting: maximum recording specification or maximum endurance.
Fast charging can reach 80% in around 24 minutes
The X6 supports USB Power Delivery and PPS fast charging.
With a compatible 30W PD 3.0 PPS adapter, Insta360 rates charging from empty to 80% at about 24 minutes. A full charge takes around 35 minutes.
A conventional compatible 9V/3A PD charger takes around 30 minutes to reach 80% and roughly 47 minutes for a full charge under Insta360’s test conditions.
The battery is removable, which also allows users to carry charged replacements for longer shoots.
Insta360 offers a separate Fast Charge Case for charging additional batteries.
64GB of storage comes built in
Unlike several earlier X Series cameras, the X6 includes 64GB of internal storage.
Around 47GB is available to the user, with the remainder reserved for system files and cache.
The camera also accepts microSD cards with capacities up to 1TB.
Insta360 requires a UHS-I card rated at V30 or faster and formatted as exFAT. Slower cards may interrupt recording or produce corrupted files.
Internal storage provides a useful fallback when somebody forgets a memory card.
However, 47GB can disappear quickly when recording high-bitrate 8K 360 footage, so a suitable microSD card remains important for longer sessions.
USB 3.1 speeds up wired transfers
The X6 uses USB-C with USB 3.1 data transfer support.
That becomes useful when creators need to move large 8K files to a computer.
Wireless connectivity also receives an upgrade. The X6 supports Wi-Fi 6 and Bluetooth Low Energy 5.3.
Large 360 files can make transfer speed an important part of the workflow. Recording a high-resolution video is only the first step; users still need to move, edit and archive that footage.
For large projects, wired USB transfers may remain more practical than relying entirely on a phone connection.
A 2.32-inch OLED replaces the traditional LCD
The rear of the camera contains a 2.32-inch OLED touchscreen with a 480 × 600 resolution.
OLED technology can provide strong contrast and deep blacks in the interface.
Insta360 has also redesigned the X6 body around the new screen and controls. Four wind-protected microphones sit around the chassis, along with front and rear ambient-light sensors.
The camera provides both a conventional quarter-inch mounting point and a quick-release connection.
This allows the X6 to work with a broader range of sticks, mounts and action-camera accessories.
The X6 weighs 196g
The Insta360 X6 weighs approximately 196g.
It measures 50 × 100 × 26.4mm without accounting for the protruding lenses. Depth reaches approximately 40mm when measured across the lenses.
The operating-temperature range extends from -20°C to 40°C.
At 196g, the X6 remains small enough for handheld use, selfie sticks and action mounting. However, the final setup can weigh considerably more once users add lens protection, mounting hardware and other accessories.
That matters particularly for helmet and vehicle mounting.

Who should consider the Insta360 X6?
The X6 makes the strongest case for creators who want to record first and decide on framing afterwards.
That workflow can prove particularly useful for travel, cycling, motorsport, hiking and other activities where constantly pointing a camera at the subject becomes difficult.
Creators producing content for several social platforms may also benefit. One 360 recording can provide several perspectives, while FreeFrame and InstaFrame 2.0 make it easier to create both horizontal and vertical video.
The X6 also has a stronger case as an only camera than earlier 360 products.
Single-Lens Mode reaches 5K60, FreeFrame provides flexible aspect ratios and PureVideo targets lower-light situations. The camera can therefore work as both a 360 recorder and a more conventional action camera.
The main trade-off remains workflow complexity.
360 video creates large files and gives creators more decisions to make after capture. Insta360’s AI tools attempt to reduce that work, but experienced editors may still prefer to control the final framing themselves.
Insta360 X6 has launched globally
Insta360 released the X6 globally on 12 August 2026 in Midnight Black and Arctic White. The company positions it as the new flagship of its X Series after a decade of developing 360 cameras.
South African retail listings have also started appearing for the X6, including listings with local warranty and support. TechnologyBlog.co.za is not including South African pricing because retail offers and bundles can change.
The largest hardware change is clear. Dual 1/1.1-inch sensors now capture 8K360 footage at 50fps, while 10-bit recording, Dolby Vision and I-Log give creators more options for colour and post-production.
The more interesting change may come from the workflow around that hardware.
InstaFrame 2.0 can deliver a conventional flat video without giving up the original 360 capture. PanoMind and AI Director then attempt to automate some of the work that traditionally happens after recording.
Combined with replaceable lens elements, 64GB of built-in storage and 20m waterproofing, those changes make the X6 considerably more than a resolution update.
Whether the automated editing features can genuinely reduce the workload of producing polished 360 content will require hands-on testing. The specifications, however, make the X6 Insta360’s most technically ambitious X Series camera to date.
