How GitLab evolved into a force in DevSecOps software

GitLab began in 2011 when Dmitriy Zaporozhets started building an open-source Git repository management application, with Valeriy Sizov contributing to the early project.

How GitLab developed

Sid Sijbrandij joined the effort as the commercial company took shape, and GitLab.com entered beta in 2012. The product expanded from source-code hosting into planning, continuous integration, security and deployment, while the company adopted an all-remote operating model and listed publicly in 2021.

By 2026, GitLab marketed a DevSecOps platform intended to cover much of the software-development lifecycle in a single application.

GitLab is important because it turned an open-source developer tool into a large enterprise software business while also demonstrating that a globally distributed company could operate without a conventional headquarters.
