From plastic parts to the factories behind modern electronics: how Foxconn scaled manufacturing

Terry Gou founded Hon Hai Plastics Corporation in Taiwan in 1974, initially making plastic components before the business moved deeper into electronics manufacturing and adopted the Hon Hai Precision Industry name in 1982.

The company established the Foxconn name for its US subsidiary in 1985 and later used it globally as the best-known brand for its manufacturing operations.

The early business looks very different from the company visible today. Following the milestones in order shows which decisions changed Foxconn (Hon Hai Precision Industry)’s direction and which capabilities remained constant.

Shenzhen turned contract manufacturing into a scale business

Hon Hai began investing in mainland China in 1988 and expanded the Longhua Science and Technology Park in Shenzhen during the 1990s. The site became emblematic of a model built around very large manufacturing campuses capable of producing electronics for global customers.

The AI era increased the value of capabilities Foxconn (Hon Hai Precision Industry) had already been developing. Compute, data, networking, software or infrastructure that once served narrower workloads became relevant to much larger AI systems.

A Taiwan listing funded international expansion

Hon Hai listed on the Taiwan Stock Exchange in 1991. During the following decade it expanded factories and operations across Asia, Europe and the Americas while moving from components into broader system assembly.

For Foxconn (Hon Hai Precision Industry), access to public markets was more than a branding milestone. It increased financial transparency and created another route to fund expansion, acquisitions or long-term product development.

The company became the manufacturing layer behind global brands

By the early 2000s, Hon Hai said it had become the world’s largest 3C manufacturing and services company. Its business model increasingly combined components, modules, assembly and supply-chain services rather than relying on one branded consumer product.

The transaction mattered because it changed the shape of Foxconn (Hon Hai Precision Industry) rather than simply adding revenue. It brought additional technology, customers, geographic reach or operating capability into the group and influenced the next stage of its strategy.

Sharp, EVs and AI infrastructure pushed Foxconn beyond assembly

Foxconn formed a strategic alliance with Sharp in 2016 and later expanded into electric vehicles through the MIH platform, Foxtron and manufacturing partnerships. It has also increased its exposure to AI servers and advanced computing infrastructure as data-centre demand grows.

The AI era increased the value of capabilities Foxconn (Hon Hai Precision Industry) had already been developing. Compute, data, networking, software or infrastructure that once served narrower workloads became relevant to much larger AI systems.

The invisible factory network became a technology strategy

As of 18 September 2026, foxconn remains a manufacturing and technology-services group whose scale comes from engineering, procurement, factories and logistics rather than a single consumer-facing product line. Chairman Young Liu has pushed the group towards EVs, semiconductors and AI infrastructure while its contract-manufacturing operations remain foundational.

Seen chronologically, the company is less a collection of unrelated products than a chain of decisions in which one capability created the conditions for the next.
