Ken and Michael Xie put security into silicon — Fortinet’s route from FortiGate to a cyber platform

Fortinet’s founding idea came from a performance problem.

Ken Xie had already built security companies before 2000 and believed software-only firewalls could become a bottleneck as internet traffic increased. Together with his brother Michael Xie and a small engineering team, he founded Fortinet in October 2000.

The company set out to combine multiple security functions with dedicated hardware acceleration.

ASICs were the answer to doing more security work at wire speed

A firewall that inspects only basic connection information performs less work than a system checking applications, malicious content and encrypted traffic.

Fortinet developed custom application-specific integrated circuits to accelerate security and networking functions.

This hardware-software combination became one of the company’s technical differentiators.

FortiGate turned multiple security boxes into one appliance

Fortinet introduced its first FortiGate systems in May 2002.

The appliances combined firewalling with additional threat-management functions, an approach commonly described at the time as unified threat management.

For customers, consolidation could reduce the number of separate devices that had to be purchased and administered.

A product name grew into a family of Forti-everything

Fortinet expanded beyond the firewall into switching, wireless networking, endpoint protection, management, analytics, email security, web security and other areas.

The common naming convention made the portfolio recognisable, but the more important goal was integration between those products.

The 2009 IPO arrived after the company had proved its hardware model

Fortinet became publicly traded in November 2009.

By that point it had spent almost a decade building a customer base around network security and had expanded internationally.

Security Fabric reframed individual products as one architecture

As organisations adopted cloud services, remote work and connected devices, the security perimeter became harder to define.

Fortinet increasingly presented its products through the Security Fabric concept: network, endpoint, cloud and security operations sharing information and policy.

The objective was to avoid isolated security tools that cannot see what the others are detecting.

Networking and security started to converge

Fortinet expanded into secure SD-WAN, switching and wireless infrastructure.

This reflects a broader market shift in which the network and the security policy protecting it are increasingly managed together.

A branch office, for example, may need routing, application control and threat prevention from the same edge platform.

Ken Xie remains the founder at the centre of the company

Ken Xie remains founder, chairman and chief executive as of September 2026.

Michael Xie, the other co-founder, continues in senior leadership. That continuity is unusual for a cybersecurity company that has grown from a start-up into a large public vendor.

AI adds another arms race to cybersecurity

Attackers can use generative AI to scale phishing, reconnaissance and malicious automation. Defenders can use machine learning and AI agents to triage alerts and detect unusual behaviour faster.

Fortinet has consequently pushed AI across threat intelligence, operations and networking rather than treating it as a standalone product category.

The original bottleneck has changed, but the engineering philosophy has not

In 2000, Fortinet was focused on processing multiple security functions without slowing the network.

In 2026, the challenge spans encrypted traffic, cloud workloads, remote users, edge devices and automated attacks. The scale is different, but the principle remains similar: integrate security deeply enough that protection does not become an operational obstacle.
