Dropbox: the history behind cloud content and collaboration

Dropbox was founded in 2007 by Drew Houston and Arash Ferdowsi after Houston became frustrated with the practical problem of keeping files available across different computers.

How Dropbox developed

The service was publicly launched in 2008 and popularised a simple model of synchronising files through the cloud. Dropbox later moved beyond storage into sharing, collaboration, document workflows and productivity tools, while becoming a public company in 2018.

Dropbox in 2026

By 2026, Dropbox was positioning itself as a broader work and content platform. Drew Houston remained a co-founder and co-CEO, with Ashraf Alkarmi appointed co-CEO in May 2026.

Dropbox helped make cloud file synchronisation an everyday consumer and small-business behaviour before the feature became a standard part of larger operating-system and productivity ecosystems.
