Two Stanford networks could not talk to each other — Cisco built a company around fixing that

Cisco’s origin story is fundamentally about two networks that could not communicate.

Len Bosack and Sandy Lerner worked at Stanford University, where different computer systems were connected to separate networks. Their efforts to make those networks exchange information helped inspire the technology that became Cisco Systems.

The pair founded Cisco on 10 December 1984.

The first product solved a practical networking problem

Cisco’s first major product was the AGS Advanced Gateway Server, shipped in 1986.

The multiprotocol router could connect different local- and wide-area networks, an important ability at a time when organisations used incompatible networking standards.

As TCP/IP and the public internet expanded, routing became essential infrastructure.

Venture capital turned a small engineering company into a growth business

Sequoia Capital invested in Cisco in 1987.

John Morgridge became president and chief executive the following year and helped professionalise the company as demand for networking equipment increased.

Cisco went public in February 1990.

Switching expanded Cisco beyond routers

The acquisition of Crescendo Communications in 1993 moved Cisco into network switching.

The Catalyst product line that followed became one of the company’s most successful franchises.

Silicon One showed Cisco still wanted control of the chip

This put custom semiconductor design back near the centre of its strategy as cloud providers and AI data centres demanded higher throughput and lower power consumption.

Splunk pushed Cisco deeper into data and security software

Cisco completed its acquisition of Splunk in 2024.

Splunk’s observability and security analytics broadened Cisco beyond moving packets towards understanding the data generated by complex digital systems.

The acquisition reflects how networking, security and operational visibility are converging.

The internet company is becoming an AI-infrastructure company

AI clusters create enormous east-west traffic between accelerators, storage and servers.

That makes networking architecture strategically important again in a way reminiscent of the internet’s early expansion.

Cisco now positions switching, optics, security and observability around this next infrastructure cycle.

From incompatible networks to global digital plumbing

Cisco began with a practical communications problem at Stanford and grew as more organisations needed their networks to interoperate.

Routers created the foundation, Catalyst expanded switching, acquisitions added collaboration and security, and Splunk extended the company into machine data.
