The MIT web-congestion problem that became Akamai: from CDN pioneer to cloud and cybersecurity

World Wide Web inventor Tim Berners-Lee challenged MIT researchers in 1995 to find a better way to handle growing web congestion. Applied-mathematics professor Tom Leighton and graduate student Danny Lewin developed algorithms for distributed content delivery and incorporated Akamai in August 1998 with Jonathan Seelig and Randall Kaplan. Rather than build a larger central server, the early Akamai idea distributed copies of content across many servers and routed users to nearby capacity.

A failed cloud platform produced a database: how MongoDB made documents a mainstream data model

MongoDB was created by founders including Dwight Merriman, Eliot Horowitz and Kevin Ryan after their work on DoubleClick and a later cloud-platform start-up called 10gen. The team concluded that existing databases were a major constraint on building internet applications and developed a document-oriented database that stored flexible JSON-like records.

Crypto miners pivoted to GPUs for AI: CoreWeave’s unlikely route to cloud infrastructure

CoreWeave was founded in 2017 by Michael Intrator, Brian Venturo and Brannin McBee, initially using GPUs for cryptocurrency mining before recognising that the same hardware could be rented for other compute-intensive workloads. The founders began turning a mining operation into a specialised cloud capable of supplying GPU capacity to visual-effects, machine-learning and other customers.
