Streamlabs combines live streaming, multistreaming and AI tools for creators
Streamlabs provides a collection of tools for creators who broadcast live video to platforms such as Twitch, YouTube, TikTok, Kick and Facebook. Its free Streamlabs Desktop application handles the core broadcasting work, while the paid Streamlabs Ultra subscription adds multistreaming and premium tools across the wider Streamlabs platform.
The platform now goes well beyond game streaming. Creators can build horizontal and vertical broadcasts, manage alerts and overlays, invite guests and repurpose streams into other content. Recent updates have also introduced AI-assisted features and direct Patreon integration. Streamlabs remains part of Logitech and continues to receive regular Desktop updates.
For South African creators, Streamlabs offers a relatively easy route into live broadcasting without buying specialised software immediately. The free version covers many core features, while Ultra targets creators who need several destinations or additional production tools.

Streamlabs Desktop remains free
Streamlabs Desktop provides the starting point for most users. The application is free to download for Windows and macOS and brings the main streaming controls into one interface. Creators can manage scenes, cameras, microphones, game captures, alerts and chat before sending the finished broadcast to a streaming platform.
This integrated approach can make the initial setup easier for new streamers. Instead of finding separate services for alerts, widgets and stream themes, users can configure many of those elements through the same Streamlabs ecosystem.
The software can stream and record at the same time, but performance depends heavily on the computer. A game, webcam, browser, streaming application and background software all compete for processor, graphics and memory resources during a live broadcast.
Streamlabs upgraded its OBS integration to version 31.1.2 during its June 2026 Desktop update. That release also improved encoder selection, output options, reliability and AV1 support for compatible RTMP streams.
Dual Output can handle horizontal and vertical streams
Modern creators often need more than the traditional 16:9 stream designed for desktop displays. TikTok and other mobile-first services place much greater emphasis on vertical video.
Streamlabs Desktop includes Dual Output, which allows a creator to build separate horizontal and vertical layouts. One canvas could show a conventional landscape gaming stream while the second uses a portrait layout designed for mobile viewers.
Streamlabs currently allows users to send one horizontal and one vertical output to separate destinations without an Ultra subscription. This makes Dual Output one of the more useful features available to free users.
The creator still needs enough computer and internet capacity to handle the broadcast. Running several video layouts, animated graphics and game capture can place more pressure on the system than a simple single-output stream.
Ultra adds broader multistreaming
The main reason to consider Streamlabs Ultra is multistreaming.
Ultra can send a broadcast to several destinations at the same time. Current supported options include Twitch, YouTube, TikTok, Kick, Facebook, Instagram, Patreon and X, with extra services available through RTMP connections.
Streamlabs handles this through its own servers. The creator sends one stream to Streamlabs, or two when using Dual Output, and its servers distribute the broadcast to the selected platforms. This avoids sending a separate full-quality upload from the creator’s connection for every destination.
That design could prove particularly useful in South Africa. Fibre packages often advertise strong download speeds while offering much lower upload capacity. Mobile connections can also change significantly according to signal quality and network congestion.
Cloud-based distribution does not remove the need for a stable connection. The original stream still needs enough upload speed to reach Streamlabs reliably.
Patreon joined the platform in 2026
Streamlabs added native Patreon integration on 21 May 2026. Creators can now connect a Patreon account through Streamlabs Desktop or the Streamlabs Plugin for OBS and broadcast directly to Patreon.
Patreon can also form part of a multistream. A creator could broadcast to Patreon members while sending the same event to Twitch, YouTube or another public platform. The configuration can also use Dual Output when different orientations make sense for each destination.
This expands Streamlabs beyond its gaming roots. Podcasters, educators and other creators with paid communities may find direct Patreon streaming more relevant than traditional Twitch-focused features.
AI tools are becoming a bigger part of Streamlabs
The June 2026 Streamlabs Desktop update introduced a dedicated AI hub. It includes tools such as Game Pulse, Reactive Overlays and Streaming Agent.
Reactive Overlays can change according to events taking place during supported games. Instead of displaying the same static graphics throughout a broadcast, an overlay can respond to actions such as eliminations or victories.
Streamlabs has also expanded AI into its alerts and other creator tools. The direction suggests that automated production will play a larger role in future versions of the software.
Creators should still use these features selectively. A stream filled with constant animation and automated effects can become distracting. It can also increase the load on the computer running the broadcast.
Alerts and overlays remain central to the experience
Streamlabs became popular partly because it simplified the visual elements around a live stream. Its Alert Box can show events such as new followers, subscriptions and viewer tips. Creators can change the appearance and sound of these alerts to match their channel.
The platform also provides a large collection of stream overlays. These can supply webcam frames, starting screens, intermission layouts, chat boxes and other visual components without requiring the creator to design everything manually.
Free themes are available, while Ultra unlocks additional premium assets. Streamlabs has also added overlays designed specifically for Dual Output, which helps creators maintain separate horizontal and vertical layouts.
This convenience forms a large part of the Streamlabs proposition. Creators can spend less time building graphics from scratch and more time configuring the actual broadcast.
Chat from several platforms can appear in one place
Multistreaming creates another problem once viewers begin responding. A creator broadcasting to several services could otherwise need separate browser windows for every chat.
Streamlabs Multichat brings supported conversations into one interface. Users can read chat from services including YouTube, Twitch, Facebook, Kick and X. Reply support varies according to the connected platform.
This can make a significant difference during a live broadcast. Switching between several applications to follow audience comments can quickly become difficult while also presenting or playing a game.
Platform restrictions still apply. Not every service provides the same chat capabilities through third-party applications.
Stream Shift lets creators change devices without ending the broadcast
Streamlabs also offers Stream Shift, which lets creators move a live broadcast between supported devices without ending the stream. A creator could start on a desktop computer and later move to a mobile device before returning to the computer.
Keeping the same broadcast alive avoids splitting the recording and viewer session into separate streams. It could also help creators who move between an indoor studio and an outside location.
The feature still depends on reliable connectivity at both ends. Moving from fibre to mobile data introduces another network variable, so creators should test the workflow before relying on it during an important live event.
Streamlabs also works with OBS
Creators who prefer OBS do not necessarily need to move their entire workflow into Streamlabs Desktop.
Streamlabs provides a Plugin for OBS that adds several Streamlabs services to an existing OBS workflow. Ultra multistreaming can also work through the plugin. Alternatively, users can configure Streamlabs multistreaming through the web dashboard and send the broadcast to it using a custom RTMP address and stream key.
This gives experienced users more flexibility. Someone who has already spent years building an OBS configuration may not want to recreate every scene and source inside another application.
New streamers may find the integrated Streamlabs Desktop interface easier. More experienced users can decide whether the additional Streamlabs services justify adding them to an OBS setup.
Streamlabs extends beyond Desktop
An Ultra subscription covers more than the premium functions inside Streamlabs Desktop. Streamlabs markets Ultra as a subscription across its wider creator suite, which includes Desktop, Mobile, Console, Talk Studio, Podcast Editor, Cross Clip and Video Editor.
Talk Studio provides browser-based streaming and recording. Its Pro tier supports 1080p broadcasting, multiple guests and multistreaming, while Ultra also includes access to Talk Studio Pro features.
Streamlabs Console targets Xbox users who want overlays and other production features without running a conventional streaming PC or capture card. It can also form part of the wider Ultra subscription.
Other tools focus on editing and repurposing content after the broadcast. This broader suite matters when evaluating Ultra because the subscription may offer more value to someone who uses several Streamlabs applications than to a creator interested only in Desktop multistreaming.
Your computer still matters
Streamlabs Desktop can run on relatively modest hardware, but gaming and streaming from the same machine creates a heavier workload.
The current minimum requirements list 8GB of RAM and Windows 11 or macOS 12. Streamlabs recommends newer hardware for more demanding broadcasts.
The recommended configuration includes 16GB or more of RAM and an SSD. Suggested processors include an 11th- or 12th-generation Intel Core i5 or a Ryzen 5000-series processor. Recommended graphics hardware includes Nvidia RTX 20- or 30-series cards or AMD RX 5000- and 6000-series GPUs.
Those recommendations should not function as a rigid shopping list. The hardware requirement changes according to the game, resolution, frame rate, encoder and number of additional applications running during the stream.
Streamlabs recommends considering 720p output when balancing performance and image quality on less powerful systems. Moving to 1080p increases the number of pixels the computer needs to process substantially.
South African streamers should check upload speed first
Internet upload capacity matters more to streaming than headline download speed.
Streamlabs currently recommends around 3.6Mbps or better for a 720p stream at 30 frames per second for most platforms. Higher resolutions, frame rates and bitrates require more capacity.
Creators should leave additional headroom instead of trying to use every available megabit. Other devices may upload files, cloud backups may start in the background and normal network fluctuations can reduce available bandwidth.
Ethernet also provides a more predictable connection than Wi-Fi for a fixed streaming setup. Streamlabs includes wired Ethernet in its recommended configuration.
South African mobile connections can work for streaming, but signal strength and cell congestion can change quickly. Test the actual upload performance from the location and at the time when the stream will take place.
Ultra uses recurring subscription billing
Streamlabs sells Ultra as a recurring monthly or annual subscription. Current Streamlabs material lists the service at US$27 per month or US$189 per year, although promotional pricing can change.
The annual option works out cheaper per month, but it requires a larger upfront payment. Streamlabs’ terms also make it clear that subscription orders authorise recurring monthly or yearly charges.
South African customers should therefore check the checkout page carefully. The final rand amount can change because of the exchange rate, bank charges and applicable taxes.

Free users already get a substantial feature set
Paying for Ultra makes little sense if the free version already covers everything a creator needs.
Streamlabs Desktop itself costs nothing. Dual Output can also send one vertical and one horizontal broadcast to separate destinations without a subscription.
A new creator who only streams to Twitch or YouTube may therefore have little reason to subscribe immediately. The free tier provides an opportunity to learn scenes, alerts, audio configuration and encoding before adding another monthly expense.
Ultra becomes more compelling when a creator regularly broadcasts to several platforms or uses the premium tools elsewhere in the Streamlabs suite. The value depends on the workflow rather than the number of features printed on a subscription page.
Streamlabs Console is a separate option for Xbox users
Xbox creators have another route through Streamlabs Console.
The browser-based service can add alerts, overlays and widgets to an Xbox stream without a conventional streaming PC or capture card. Users can control scenes through a phone, tablet or computer.
Console Pro currently costs US$11 month to month or US$79 per year. Both options include a seven-day trial. Ultra subscribers receive Streamlabs Console as part of the wider subscription.
The feature currently focuses on Xbox. Creators using PlayStation or Nintendo hardware should not assume that the same console workflow applies to their systems.
Automatic updates cannot currently be disabled
Streamlabs Desktop updates regularly, which helps it keep pace with changing streaming platforms and encoding technology.
There is one important management consideration. Streamlabs states that users cannot currently disable or delay automatic Desktop updates. The company rolls updates out in phases to manage stability and catch problems.
Most home creators may not mind this approach. Businesses or professional studios often prefer tighter control over software changes before an important event.
Anyone using Streamlabs for commercial broadcasts should therefore avoid making major system changes immediately before a critical production. Keep a tested backup plan available where possible.
Trustpilot reviews are positive overall
Streamlabs held a 4.3 out of five Trustpilot score from 1,558 reviews when checked on 11 August 2026. Around 73% of ratings gave the company five stars, while 16% gave it one star.
Recent positive feedback often focuses on ease of use and the convenience of bringing several streaming features together. Some negative reviews describe software freezes, connectivity problems, dropped frames and other technical issues.
Customer reviews cannot establish how Streamlabs will perform on a particular computer or internet connection. A streaming setup contains too many variables for one person’s experience to guarantee another’s.
The reviews remain useful for identifying patterns worth checking during a trial period. Creators should test recording, alerts, audio synchronisation and platform connections before relying on the software for an important event.

Who should consider Streamlabs?
Streamlabs makes the strongest case for creators who want to get a professional-looking live stream running without assembling every component themselves. The integrated approach brings overlays, alerts, widgets and broadcasting controls into a relatively accessible workflow.
Ultra becomes more relevant once a creator expands beyond one streaming destination. Someone who regularly broadcasts to Twitch, YouTube and TikTok can benefit from cloud multistreaming and combined chat management. The broader collection of premium creator applications may add further value.
Beginners should start with the free version. A paid subscription will not improve weak content, an unreliable internet connection or unsuitable hardware. Learning how audio levels, scenes, encoding and lighting work will have a greater effect on early streams.
Experienced OBS users have a different calculation. The Streamlabs Plugin for OBS and RTMP multistreaming options mean they can use selected Streamlabs services without abandoning an established OBS workflow.
Should South African creators pay for Streamlabs Ultra?
Streamlabs Desktop gives South African creators enough free functionality to start streaming without immediately taking on another international subscription. Its current Dual Output support also helps creators experiment with horizontal and vertical audiences at no additional software cost.
Ultra makes more sense once multistreaming becomes part of a regular content strategy. Its cloud distribution can reduce the upload burden of reaching several platforms, while the subscription also unlocks premium functions across the wider Streamlabs suite.
The decision should come after testing the free software on the actual streaming computer and internet connection. Check CPU and GPU usage while the game or application is running. Record a test session, inspect the audio and then run a private or unlisted stream where the platform allows it.
South African buyers should also check the dollar price and recurring billing terms before subscribing. Exchange-rate changes can make an international annual plan more expensive in rand when renewal arrives.
For creators who only stream to one platform, free Streamlabs Desktop may already provide enough. For those building audiences across several platforms, Ultra’s multistreaming tools offer the clearest reason to consider paying.
