What Is Streamlabs? Free Tools, Multistreaming & AI

Its best-known product is Streamlabs Desktop, but the platform now also includes mobile streaming, an OBS plugin, browser tools, multistreaming, widgets, editing products and AI-assisted production features.
The important distinction in 2026 is that Streamlabs is not simply “OBS with a skin.” It has become a broader creator platform, while still using familiar scene, source and streaming concepts.
What is Streamlabs and what does it do?
Streamlabs helps creators capture video and audio, build stream scenes, add alerts and widgets, manage chat, record content and broadcast to services such as Twitch, YouTube, TikTok, Kick and Facebook.
Streamlabs Desktop is free to download for Windows and macOS. Some advanced cloud and creator features are part of the paid Streamlabs Ultra subscription.
Is Streamlabs free?
Yes, the core Streamlabs Desktop application is free. But not every feature is free. For example, full cloud multistreaming to multiple destinations is positioned as an Ultra feature.
Streamlabs also offers a limited free multistreaming route through Dual Output: the company says creators can send one vertical and one horizontal destination without a subscription. That is different from unlimited-platform multistreaming.
What is Streamlabs Multistream?
Multistream lets a creator broadcast to several platforms at the same time. Streamlabs says its cloud system receives one uploaded stream and then forwards it to the selected platforms, reducing the need for the creator’s internet connection to upload a separate full-bitrate stream to each destination.
The current Streamlabs Multistream page lists Twitch, YouTube, TikTok, Kick, Facebook, Patreon and custom RTMP destinations among supported options.
What is Streamlabs Ultra?
Ultra is Streamlabs’ paid creator bundle. Streamlabs lists benefits including full multistreaming, access to its larger overlay and widget library, higher AI feature limits, watermark-free editing features and additional creator tools.
Pricing can change by region and promotion, so creators should check the live checkout page rather than relying on an old article for a permanent subscription price.
What is Streamlabs Sidekick?
Sidekick is Streamlabs’ AI-powered co-host, producer and technical assistant. It can respond to voice commands, help switch scenes, control audio, react to gameplay and provide troubleshooting support.
Streamlabs says the Sidekick can run with an optional 2D or 3D avatar or in the background. Free, Ultra and Ultra Plus plans have different interaction limits.
Those limits and system requirements matter. A 3D AI avatar is more demanding than ordinary streaming software, and Streamlabs’ own troubleshooting documentation specifies much higher GPU/VRAM requirements for the full agent workload.
Automations moved directly into Streamlabs Desktop
In August 2026, Streamlabs moved gameplay-triggered Automations into the Desktop editor. These can switch scenes, save replays, show sources or trigger effects when supported game events occur.
Streamlabs says free users can enable up to five automations at once, while Ultra subscribers can enable more. Sidekick remains a separate feature for co-hosting and assistant functions.
Can Streamlabs work with OBS?
Yes. Streamlabs offers a plugin for OBS and also supports multistreaming through a custom RTMP workflow. That gives creators who prefer OBS Studio a way to use some Streamlabs services without switching their entire production setup to Streamlabs Desktop.
Streamlabs versus OBS Studio
OBS Studio is an open-source streaming and recording application. Streamlabs Desktop wraps a broader commercial creator ecosystem around similar streaming workflows. The right choice depends on whether the creator values maximum control and a leaner open-source stack, or integrated widgets, cloud features and Streamlabs’ paid ecosystem.
Neither option is automatically better for every channel. A creator who already has a stable OBS workflow should not migrate simply because an AI feature exists; a new streamer may prefer Streamlabs because more tools are integrated into one account.
