Group buying, farms and Temu: how Pinduoduo became PDD Holdings
Pinduoduo did not try to copy a conventional online department store.
When the platform began commercial operations in 2015, its defining feature was a team-purchase model that encouraged shoppers to share products with friends and social contacts. Buyers who formed groups could access more attractive prices, turning shopping into a social-discovery mechanism rather than only a search-and-checkout process.
The company was founded by Zheng Huang, also widely known as Colin Huang, a former Google engineer and serial entrepreneur.
Social shopping was the wedge into a crowded market
China already had enormous e-commerce platforms when Pinduoduo arrived.
Rather than competing only through catalogue size or premium branding, Pinduoduo focused heavily on value-for-money merchandise and interaction. Team purchases could aggregate demand, which in turn could help merchants move larger volumes.
The design proved particularly effective on smartphones, where sharing links and deals through social networks was frictionless.
Agriculture became more than another product category
Pinduoduo put unusual emphasis on agricultural goods and smallholder farmers.
The platform used aggregated demand to connect producers more directly with consumers and invested in programmes intended to improve digital participation by farmers.
This created a distinct identity from e-commerce platforms built mainly around branded consumer goods.
The 2018 US listing accelerated the company’s scale
Pinduoduo became publicly traded in the United States in 2018.
The listing exposed the speed of its growth to global investors while also increasing scrutiny of merchant quality, competition, regulation and the economics of customer acquisition.
Duo Duo Grocery moved closer to everyday consumption
The company expanded into grocery purchasing and supply-chain initiatives.
Fresh food creates operational challenges very different from electronics or clothing because spoilage, regional supply and delivery timing matter far more.
That made grocery a test of whether the platform could extend its demand-aggregation model into more frequent purchases.
Temu turned a Chinese commerce story into a global one
Temu began commercial operations in 2022, initially launching in North America before expanding to other regions.
The platform brought PDD’s value-focused commerce model to international consumers and rapidly increased the importance of markets outside China.
This also changed how the parent company needed to describe itself. It was no longer only the operator of Pinduoduo.
Pinduoduo Inc. became PDD Holdings in 2023
In February 2023, the parent company changed its name from Pinduoduo Inc. to PDD Holdings Inc.
The new name better reflected a group operating multiple businesses rather than a parent identified entirely with one Chinese marketplace.
The founder stepped back while the operating team moved forward
Zheng Huang stepped away from day-to-day leadership after the company’s early high-growth period.
By 2026, Lei Chen and Jiazhen Zhao serve as co-chairmen and co-chief executives. Both are founding members who held important technology, operations and supply-chain roles inside the company.
That leadership structure marks a transition from a founder-led start-up towards a larger commerce group run by executives who grew with it.
Low prices are only the visible layer of a data problem
A large commerce platform must forecast demand, rank products, manage promotions, combat fraud and connect millions of buyers with merchants.
PDD’s growth therefore depends on recommendation systems, supply-chain data and marketplace operations as much as on discounting.
The same is true for Temu, where international expansion adds localisation, logistics and regulatory complexity.
PDD Holdings is now a two-platform history
The company’s first decade can be divided into two phases.
Pinduoduo created a social-commerce engine around team purchasing and value. Temu then exported a related focus on price and discovery to a global market.
