Assassin’s Creed Shadows: A New Era of Stealth and Samurai Action

The long-running Assassin’s Creed franchise continues to evolve with Assassin’s Creed Shadows, an ambitious open-world action-adventure title set in feudal Japan. Developed by Ubisoft, the game brings players into the late Sengoku period, a time marked by political upheaval, shifting alliances, and intense conflict. This setting provides a dramatic backdrop for a story that blends historical inspiration with the series’ signature stealth-driven gameplay.

Released in March 2025 for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S, the game represents one of Ubisoft’s most significant entries in the franchise in recent years. It introduces new mechanics, a dynamic world, and a dual-protagonist narrative designed to offer different playstyles within the same story.

Dual Protagonists, Two Playstyles

A defining feature of Assassin’s Creed Shadows is its two playable characters: Naoe, a stealth-focused shinobi, and Yasuke, a powerful samurai inspired by a historical figure. Each character approaches missions differently, allowing players to adapt their strategy depending on the situation.

Naoe excels at stealth and infiltration. She uses tools such as grappling hooks, silent assassinations, and environmental concealment to move unseen. Yasuke, by contrast, emphasizes direct combat with heavy weapons and powerful strikes. This design gives players the option to tackle objectives through quiet infiltration or open confrontation.

A Dynamic Open World

The game world in Assassin’s Creed Shadows is designed to reflect the changing seasons and environmental conditions of feudal Japan. Weather and seasonal shifts affect gameplay in meaningful ways. For example, rain can mask movement sounds, while snow may reveal footprints that enemies can track.

Lighting and shadow also play a greater role than in previous titles. Darkness can help conceal players during stealth missions, while daylight increases the risk of detection. These systems aim to deepen immersion and encourage tactical planning during exploration and combat.

Launch Reception and Player Response

Upon release, Assassin’s Creed Shadows received generally favourable reactions from critics and players. Early reviews highlighted its dual-character gameplay and expansive world design. On digital platforms such as Steam, the game achieved a “mostly positive” reception from players shortly after launch.

The title also marked an important release for Ubisoft, with pre-orders reportedly comparable to those of Assassin’s Creed Odyssey, one of the franchise’s most successful entries.

Expanding the Assassin’s Creed Universe

Assassin’s Creed Shadows continues Ubisoft’s strategy of exploring new historical settings while refining the open-world RPG mechanics introduced in earlier titles. The combination of stealth gameplay, cinematic storytelling, and large-scale exploration reinforces the series’ reputation as one of the gaming industry’s most recognizable action-adventure franchises.

With its feudal Japan setting, dual protagonists, and dynamic environmental systems, Assassin’s Creed Shadows represents a significant step forward in the evolution of the Assassin’s Creed formula.
