SUMCO’s modern history began in 1999 when Sumitomo Metal Industries, Mitsubishi Materials and Mitsubishi Materials Silicon created Silicon United Manufacturing Corporation around advanced silicon-wafer production. By 2026, SUMCO was one of the major global suppliers of high-purity silicon wafers used as the starting substrate for semiconductor manufacturing.
